2023 PlayStation Showcase Recap

This PlayStation Showcase recap will cover everything shown during the presentation streamed on Wednesday, May 24th 2023.

After going an extended period of time without seeing a formal PlayStation Showcase, fans of the Sony console were finally treated to a preview of the future release in store for the coming years. Jim Ryan, – the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, – made a brief appearance at the top of the show and made a point of stating that developers are only just beginning to tap into the full potential of the hardware. Trailers for the following games were then shown:

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Fairgame$

The presentation kicked off with a first glimpse of Fairgame$, the upcoming title from Haven, the studio founded by Jade Raymond. While no gameplay was shown, the concept revolves around an anarcho-hacker theme, featuring heists to steal from the wealthy.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Helldivers II

Helldivers, the title from Arrowhead, made a return with another humorous and ironic trailer. This cooperative game involves squads of four players battling alien creatures and collecting resources for Super Earth. However, not all Helldivers will survive the intense challenges.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Immortals of Aveum

As part of the EA Originals lineup, Immortals of Aveum, a shooter with magical elements, made its appearance, showcasing its action-packed gameplay and a glimpse of its story. The game will release before too long on July 20th.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Ghostrunner II

Ghostrunner II, the sequel to the indie hit from 505 Games, was announced, promising an exhilarating experience with the addition of motorcycles and adrenaline-pumping levels. While the release year is confirmed as 2023, a specific date has yet to be revealed.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Phantom Blade

Phantom Blade, an exciting ninja game developed by Cruelman Studio, was showcased, featuring impressive cinematics, fast-paced action, and agile combat. The release date for Phantom Blade on PS5 is still pending.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Sword of the Sea

GiantSquid returned with Sword of the Sea, which appears to be a spiritual sequel to Journey. This visually stunning game allows players to surf in the sand and swim with dolphins in a unique and captivating manner.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: The Talos Principle 2

The highly regarded puzzle game, The Talos Principle, makes its comeback with The Talos Principle 2, promising an explosive experience in 2023.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Neva

Neva, a cinematic project from the creators of Gris, was introduced, showcasing its stunning visual style. Although no gameplay details were provided, the game is scheduled to release in 2024.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purrebean

Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purrebean made an appearance, announcing the return of the Cat Quest franchise in 2024.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Foamstars

Square Enix presented Foamstars, a colorful team shooter featuring foam and bubbles that evokes memories of Splatoon.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire, a game blending the aesthetics of a children’s book with 3D environments, revealed its trailer, providing insight into its story and gameplay modes. The release date for the game is yet to be announced.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Teardown

Teardown, a unique blend of Minecraft and Lego styles, offers an intriguing mix of action, explosions, and chases. The game is expected to release at some point later this year.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake

The long-rumored Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater remake was unveiled, accompanied by the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, which includes the first three installments of the series.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink made an appearance at the PlayStation showcase, although a specific release date was not provided.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Street Fighter 6

Capcom showcased a brief trailer focusing on the story mode of Street Fighter 6, where a new generation of fighters will encounter the legendary characters. The highly anticipated game is set to release on June 6th.

Synapse, another shooter that delves into the perspective of the victim. The game stars the voice talents of Jennifer Hale and David Hayter and is scheduled for release on July 4th.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Beat Saber

Beat Saber made a return for PlayStation VR 2, along with the Queen Music Pack, providing players with rhythmic gameplay and immersive music experiences.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Bungie

Bungie showcased a return to the classic shooter Marathon, and an update on a Destiny 2 expansion called The Final Shape, which features the return of a character voiced by Nathan Fillion.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Concord

Firewalk announced their new IP: Concord, a science fiction game set in space, coming to PS5 and PC. Not many other details have been revealed at the time of writing.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Gran Turismo Movie

Sony then took the opportunity to share a new trailer for the Gran Turismo movie, providing a cinematic experience for racing enthusiasts.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Project Q

Project Q was announced, allowing remote play of PS5 from anywhere using a screen. More details will be unveiled soon. Additionally, PlayStation Earphones were announced, featuring compatibility with smartphones.

PlayStation Showcase Recap: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Finally, the much-anticipated gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was revealed, showcasing new villains like Kraven and the Lizard, as well as gameplay that demonstrates the interactions between Peter and Miles. The surprising twist is Peter’s symbiote transformation, foreshadowed by the teaser featuring Venom as the main villain. No specific release date was given for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, just that it will release in the fall of 2023.

That was everything shown during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. Overall, this was a pretty disappointing showing given that there were no real new first-party titles were shown that we didn’t already know about.
