Trailing behind the animated sequel movie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Takashi Yamazaki’s recent release Godzilla Minus One secure the second and third spots. Interestingly, the highest-grossing film of 2023, Margot Robbie’s Barbie, did not even make it to the top 10 on the list, receiving a mere 7 rating.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse became the highest-rated movie of 2023 with an impressive rating of 8.7 on IMDB. In this Spider-Verse sequel, Miles Morales goes on a multiversal adventure with Gwen Stacy. The film grossed $690.5 million at the box office, ranking as the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. The Metascore for the film stands at 86, and it holds a 95% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is now available for rent on Apple TV+.
Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s biopic on the Father of Atom Bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, claimed the second spot with an 8.5 rating on IMDB. Oppenheimer became the highest-grossing biopic and the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, grossing $952 million at the box office. The film received a higher Metascore of 88 and a Tomatometer score of 93% fresh. The Oppenheimer Blu-ray version is now available for purchase on Apple TV+ and Amazon Video.
Godzilla Minus One is currently running successfully in theaters, winning the hearts of American audiences. It has an impressive 8.5 rating on IMDB. Set in the Japanese kaiju franchise, the film is a visual marvel made on a modest budget of $15 million. Takashi Yamazaki’s storytelling and expertise in the VFX department are strong points for the film. It has a Metascore of 79 and a Tomatometer score of 97% fresh.

Despite Leading The Box Office, Margot Robbie’s Barbie Falls Behind On Ratings
The biggest surprise in the IMDB rating came for the highest-grossing movie of 2023, Barbie. While a divisive movie in many aspects, there was no denying that Barbie was an entertaining watch. However, the film lacked a position among the highest-rated movies, receiving only a rating of 7 on IMDB. Barbie grossed $1.4 billion at the box office, and its release alongside Oppenheimer created the ‘Barbenheimer’ cultural phenomenon in theaters.
Other films that surpassed Barbie in the top spots included Emma Stone’s Poor Things, the Paul Giamatti-led film The Holdovers, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Poor Things will be released in theaters on December 8th. However, The Holdovers and Killers of the Flower Moon were disappointing ventures at the box office, despite receiving critical acclaim.
