I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo. I’m ready.

The actor recalled his best memories with the younger cast members and “how funny and great they were.” He called it “the highlight of my career.” Apart from returning to his role, Black also wants the original writer to return.

You know Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius, and we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle.

Director Richard Linklater responded to the most asked question via his interview with UNILAD, where he reminisced how long it has been since the film was released. “There was talk of it years ago but I’d love to work with Jack again,” he stated. The filmmaker will only work on a sequel on one condition: “There’s got to be a reason, there’s got to be something.”

He mused over the fact that his highly successful romantic franchise, the Before trilogy, had every reason to get a sequel, and that’s the same sentiment he wants for School of Rock.

Don’t do it unless there’s an idea. The reason we did two Before’s is there was a good idea screaming out, there’s something to express about this.

The famed director noted that one should be “incorporating that time” and it must resonate with people.

Richard Linklater Reveals Initial Thoughts On School Of Rock

Richard Linklater reflected on School of Rock and admitted he already had low expectations for the movie when he made it. He spoke with NME:

I loved working on that movie, and I loved Jack and the whole process. But I did that for my own very personal reasons. When I went into that project, it didn’t feel like a big hit. It could’ve been a pretty cheesy little movie, the way it might’ve been going!

The movie ended up becoming a cult-classic favorite from the early 2000s, and it has finally found its audience nearly after two decades. If fans continue to campaign for a sequel, Linklater may find a reason to work on the story.

As the director noted, “There’s always a good idea to be had.” At this point, all fans can do is wait for that idea to come through. Meanwhile, School of Rock is available to stream on Netflix.
