Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator solidified his stance as a reputed action star. While the actor earned his breakthrough role in Conan the Barbarian, it was actually the Terminator series which him one of the biggest action stars in the history of cinema. His ripped physique, amazing action sequences, and a fresh take on the sci-fi genre made the franchise one of the best sci-fi movies ever.

However, despite immense popularity and Schwarzenegger’s status as a ‘bankable’ star, the last two movies of the franchise have performed surprisingly poorly. And it is their below-par performance that seems to have made Schwarzenegger finally realize that he’d be better off without them or rather the franchise would be better off without him.

Till date, 1984’s Terminator remains among the most popular and loved sci-fi movies of all time. The reason being the movie’s innovative storyline, amazing characters including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic cyborg role, intense action sequences, and Jame Cameron‘s innovative storytelling. All of these elements combined and more made the movie a super hit.

The other three that followed in its wake were also fairly good and performed well. However, the last two movies Genisys and Dark Fate failed to meet the audience’s expectations. Especially Terminator: Dark Fate was the worst one as it only managed to earn a meager $261 million worldwide.

Seeing the movie’s reception, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that it is time that he bids adieu to the franchise that made him the star he is today.

“The franchise is not done. I’m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator.”

As unfortunate and forlorn as it sounds, it is about time the Terminator franchise gets a fresh face and a fresh storyline.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Terminator franchise have been synonymous for decades, especially since fans still hail him for by epic role as T-800 Terminator. Despite his iconic role, the miserable performance of the last two films has made him realize that it would not be good for the franchise to continue with him since he knew particularly well that the last two movies were bound to fail,

“The first three movies were great. Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor. Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written.”

While there haven’t been any official announcements, only speculations, it would be an end of an era when the Terminator franchise is revived without Schwarzenegger’s cybernetic organism. And it would be nostalgic to fans to know that T-800 would not be ‘back‘.

The Terminator franchise can be rented on YouTube.
