Hollywood often produces fictitious, enchanted love stories where the chemistry between the co-stars generates buzz. However, acting also has unique challenges, as Angelina Jolie painfully learned while playing Johnny Depp’s lover in their 2010 romantic thriller film.

The Academy Award-winning actress, 48, has worked with many notable actors, including Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, and Nicolas Cage. But early in her career, Jolie was eager to collaborate with the Pirates of the Caribbean star. Why? She once reportedly had a huge crush on Depp.

Finally, everything fell into place, and she was able to collaborate with her hero, Johnny Depp, in The Tourist. But it was not what she had anticipated. Jolie probably regretted having that lifelong crush on Depp because of his alleged behavior, which was really unexpected for the actress.

Johnny Depp portrayed an American named Frank Tupelo/Alexander Pearce, who met Angelina Jolie‘s elegant character Elsie Clinton-Ford in The Tourist while they were both on vacation in Italy. Although they were initially eager to collaborate on the film, he was not the easiest actor to work with, especially during the kissing scenes.

There were conflicting accounts of the two A-listers’ time on set, and Celeb Bitchy speculated that they did not get along. Jolie was fed up with Depp, according to an unnamed source:

“She’s getting fed up with Johnny. Their chemistry was supposed to fly off the charts, but in private, they’re not getting along.”

The source went on to say that the sentiment was shared by both stars:

“Johnny retreats to his own trailer until he’s called out again. He thinks she’s really full of herself.”

However, when they gushed about one another in public, Jolie and Depp were only behaving professionally when discussing each other’s work. Vanity Fair quoted the latter as saying the following about his time spent working with the Unbroken actress:

“She’s everything. She’s kind of a walking poem, Angelina is. She’s this perfect beauty but at the same time very deep, very smart, very quick, very clever, very funny, and also has a very perverse sense of humor.”

Angelina Jolie Had Kind Words For Johnny Depp

The reviews for The Tourist were merely average. Additionally, the shoot was expensive with a $100 million budget, given the cast, and the location. The movie made $278 million at the box office, just on the strength of its star power. The prospect of seeing Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp together for the first time on a big screen was thrilling.

According to Jolie’s comments to IGN, the two got along from the beginning:

“Oh, he’s just such a nice guy. You walk into someone’s office and you see what’s important to them. He’s got lots of books and lots of pictures of his children. So it’s immediately somebody you feel at ease with. He’s a real, experimental, deeply feeling artist, who gives a lot and tries a lot and is very gracious on set to everybody.”

Later on, Jolie would confess that she had not expected Depp’s funny sense of humor. The actress alleged that due to the actor’s antics on set, the two lost a lot of time while filming (via IGN):

“There’s some footage floating round, which I’m surprised hasn’t surfaced… God, there was a good 20 minutes, half-an-hour early on where we could not stop laughing. We wasted a lot of film. And got a lot of producers frustrated. The outtakes of this I’m sure are very funny.”

Despite the film’s unfavorable reviews, it received three Golden Globe nominations.
