When it comes to any AAA game, there will always be plenty of characters that you will either grow to love or grow to hate, and The Last of Us is no different. Throughout the two games that have currently been released, there have been plenty of characters that players have gotten to know over the years and have either created a bond with or wished they never existed.
Now that The Last of Us TV show has become a major hit with its first season, which follows the story of the first game, gamers are eagerly awaiting the second season, which will follow the same storyline as the second game with a few minor tweaks to improve the story and its pace.
However, the second game in the franchise was met with a lot of criticism over its characters, as there are some that gamers would happily never see again, while there are some that gamers would have loved to spend more time with.
Whether your a Joel fan all the way, looking forward to seeing Ellie grow in the second season, or waiting to see Shimmer the horse, there are plenty of characters that will be making an appearance. Below are a lot of the characters we need to see and those we don’t. Be warned: some spoilers will be contained below; read at your own risk.
The Last of Us Season 2 Characters We Need to See and Those We Don’t
1. We Do Need to See Ellie Williams Return
This first entry in this list is a little obvious, as for anyone who has played The Last of Us Part 2, you will know that the second game is focused primarily on Ellie and her struggle to deal with a difficult situation on a journey for revenge.
The reason why it has been added to this list is because Bella Ramsey, the actress who plays Ellie in the show, has already shown us what an amazing job she can do as the character, and it will be an incredible performance to see her transform Ellie from the scared little girl who likes puns and dad jokes to the woman who is willing to take bullets, slash throats, and overall be an unstoppable killing machine.
Even though this performance will most likely be the toughest Bella Ramsey has taken on in her career, it is very clear that she will have the skill and experience to be able to pull off such an amazing character, and it could be that performance that creates a whole new fan base for The Last of Us franchise.
2. We Don’t Need to See Joel Miller Return
Right, bear with me on this. Again, for those who have played The Last of Us games and know how the story will play out, it will be one of the toughest episodes of TV that many gamers will have to watch, as they will essentially be re-watching one of the most daunting moments in video game history, but in live action.
To be clear, seeing Joel return in The Last of Us season 2 is a given, as his story coming to an end is what will begin this new season and push the narrative forward for Ellie to take the reigns and lead the franchise in a whole new direction in future installments.
However, as said above, seeing Joel return in this next season will be an incredible challenge since the show is supposedly following the same plot as the game, will most likely feature some of the flashbacks that take place in the game, and will most likely bring tears into the games many fans eyes as the game itself already managed that.
3. We Do Need to See Dina Return
At the moment, it is unclear how faithful the second season of The Last of Us will be to the original game, but if the show follows the same storyline as the game, it is practically guaranteed that Dina will be a major part of the show, and thanks to a small appearance in the first season of the show, many viewers believe Dina has been teased and will be making a return in the second season.
Throughout the second game, Dina is seen as both the voice of reason and Ellie’s calm in the storm, as Dina is always there to comfort Ellie and provide her with whatever assistance she can. Since Dina is essentially vital to the story, it would be fantastic to see her make an appearance and bring the many heartfelt interactions between her and Ellie to life, but for many reasons, this may prove to be problematic.
When it came to The Last of Us Part 2, Dina was a very important part of the story and helped to create many of the iconic moments within the game that have stuck with players since the game’s release. To see her unique character portrayed on the show would be an incredible sight and well worth the wait.
4. We Don’t Need to See Seth Return
Now this may have only been a minor role within The Last of Us Part 2, but there is one character that could easily be left out of the show, and that is Seth. During the intro to the game, Seth is introduced as a resident of Jackson and shown as a rather rude and homophobic man.
For many reasons, it would be in very poor taste to have Seth shown in the show, as many of the viewers would find his behaviour towards Ellie and Dina completely unacceptable. Since his role in the game is very minor and doesn’t impact the overall story, it would make sense to remove this character and change certain aspects of this altercation to make it less offensive.
This would mean that the early moments in the show would differ slightly from the game if it followed the storyline flow, but this wouldn’t be such a large problem in the larger scheme of things as it would only require changing the reasons why Ellie is angry at Joel at the beginning of the season.
5. We Do Need to See Lev Return
For those who have played the game, Lev is an incredibly important character who has impacted the game’s other playable protagonist, Abby. If the show follows the same plot line as the game, it will most likely shift its focus onto Abby, who is being played by Kaitlyn Dever.
If this is the case, then Lev will be a vital character that needs to be involved within the show, as he plays a vital role in Abby’s story and eventually turns the tide of the entire story. However, there could be a challenge with bringing Lev into the show, as there was a large amount of controversy regarding the character, as Lev was a transgender character who was raised in a highly religious lifestyle.
There are those who believe Lev is a fantastic character and was created with both care and love for the LGBTQ community, while there are those who believe it was just a decision made by the development team to create pity for those going through the same struggle that Lev goes through.
6. We Do Not Need to See the Rat King Return
This feature is entirely aimed at the gamers who suffered through one of the most gruesome boss fights in The Last of Us Part 2, as one character I am sure no one will want to see is the Rat King.
During a rather horrific portion of the game, players encounter the Rat King, and the best way to describe him is as a cluster of infected, made up of different variations of the infected like the bloater, clickers, and stalkers.
If you’re not sick to your stomach with the memory of this abomination, then seeing it in live action as it stalks Abby around a hospital will definitely provide you with some nightmares, as this enemy is both horrible to look at and difficult to kill, and if it does feature within the show, it will hopefully be a small feature just like the bloater in the first season.
