The new era of DC Studios begins with filmmaker James Gunn’s soft reboot of the franchise. Gunn, the co-CEO of the studios, has been planning to make many major changes in the franchise and is all set to introduce new iterations of many fan-favorite characters. With so many projects lined up, fans are particularly excited about these 3 projects: The Penguin, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Creature Commandos.
With the failure of movies like The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Blue Beetle, 2023 hasn’t been the best year for DC Studios. As per the projections, DC Studios’ upcoming movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is also expected to be another disappointing film from DC. This reboot was necessary for the franchise to keep up with Marvel Studios.
The Penguin is all set to focus on the iconic villain
Lauren LeFranc’s upcoming television limited series, The Penguin, a spin-off from the film The Batman (2022), features Colin Farrell as the Penguin, reprising his role from The Batman. The show will explore Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. The series, which will consist of 8 episodes, is scheduled to be released on Max in late 2024.
Joker: Folie à Deux will introduce Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn
Initially, 2019’s Joker was planned to be a standalone film with no sequels, however, by the end of 2019, multiple sources claimed that a sequel was in the works. Joker: Folie à Deux will feature actor Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his role as the Joker, and introduce Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. With the filming wrapped up in April, the film is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 4, 2024.
DC’s Creature Commandos finally puts a spotlight on the iconic team
The team of military superhumans, Creature Commandos, have been a fan-favorite for quite some time now and finally, DC Studios will be releasing an adult animated television series focused on the team. The series is planned to be the first television series in James Gunn‘s new DC Universe (DCU).
What else can fans expect from James Gunn’s DC Universe?
As of now, all eyes are on James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy (2025) as the film will introduce a new actor as Superman in his new DC Universe (DCU). After Zack Snyder’s exit, Gunn has been planning to do a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This means that certain cast members of the DCEU will reprise their roles while some will be replaced.
This plan was made due to the poor performance of some DCEU films. The universe of the DCU is divided into chapters, starting with Gods and Monsters, which will begin in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos but the first film in the chapter will be 2025’s Superman: Legacy.
Apart from this, the sequel to 2022’s The Batman, titled The Batman – Part II, is also scheduled for release on October 3, 2025, as a part of a Batman-focused shared universe, which is separate from DC’s main universe.
