5 Most Popular Movie Anti-Heroes, Ranked

Featured Video

Anti-heroes are not necessarily villains of the story but they are the ones who have complex personalities and are often just misunderstood. They do things opposite of what a typical hero usually does but that does not essentially make them evil. They just don’t have their moral compass set right and straight. Certainly, they say and do things for their own gain but certainly not harm other people close to them.

There are so many anti-heroes that fans surprisingly love and feel connected with. These characters have so many qualities that are way more interesting and appealing than those of the hero protagonists. Here are our five best movie anti-hero picks:

Max Rockatansky

Max has always been the anti-hero in Mad Max: Fury Road, the post-apocalyptic action film starring Tom Hardy. After his family’s death, he lives and travels alone, in the wide and hot desert wasteland with no destination at all.

He was even hesitant to help a bunch of women trying to escape from Immortan Joe. When he met Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, they formed a chaotic team against the tyrannical warlord.

Catwoman

Selina Kyle, or more popularly known as Catwoman, is undoubtedly one of the most cunning characters in the Batman movie franchise. The sly cat burglar is portrayed by Anne Hathaway in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

Catwoman works closely with Batman although not for the purposes that we know but mostly for her own benefit. She has no allegiance at all because just before teaming up with Bruce Wayne, she was making a deal with Bane.

Loki Laufeyson

The god of mischief does exactly what a mischievous deity would do. He fools everyone around him and makes them think he is a good being. Loki has switched sides more than you can count in one hand. His moral compass is up in the air and all of his motives are for his own sake.

Despite all of the unforgivable things he did, he is a redeemable character. He helped Thor save Jane Foster from the Dark Elves and even tried to kill Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

Jack Sparrow

There is nothing more important to Jack Sparrow than his precious Black Pearl ship. He is willing to sacrifice anything (or anyone) just to save it. Jack’s alliance is unclear, or if he has any.

The pirate captain often uses his tricks to fool anyone so that he can carry on with whatever silly plans he has in mind. As the main protagonist in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Jack is still deemed as a good character despite his self-centered motives.

Maleficent

The titular anti-heroine protagonist from the Sleeping Beauty reboot film is portrayed by none other than Angelina Jolie. Her character, Maleficent, grew up as a sweet and innocent girl who turned evil after she was betrayed by the love of her life.

As a form of revenge, she kidnaps King Stefan’s daughter, Princess Aurora, and cursed the child with eternal slumber upon reaching the age of 16.
