From actors performing splendidly on-screen to everything that happens off-screen ranging from a relationship formed through on-screen chemistry to a fight of egos between celebrity co-stars–Hollywood has seen it all. In fact, if anything, the entertainment industry of Hollywood is quite the perfect place that is so competitive and all-consuming that feuds run rampant here every time the sheer vastness of star power gets mixed with egos at play.

Turns out Hollywood is more messed up than it seems.

That being said, not everything you see on the big screen is real. In fact, it is far from real considering how you could see the perfect pair on-screen with the most desirable chemistry, and then you’ll come to terms with the fact that the same ‘perfect power couple’ or the ‘perfect best friends’ on-screen actually despised working with each other in real life. Thus, for these feuds, we have compiled below a list of 5 co-stars who allegedly hated working together. Read on!

1. Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman

Meryl Streep might have blown her other Hollywood co-stars away with her exceptional talent, but Dustin Hoffman just wasn’t the one to fall into her trap. This feud started years back in the 1970s when the pair were working on their multiple-time Oscar-winning film Kramer vs Kramer (which even won both the actors’ Best Actor and Best Actress in a leading role).

Back then, Streep once had a late improvisation made to the script to give it a better and more progressive angle, which was approved by the writer-director, Robert Benton. However, this didn’t sit well with Hoffman, who had already prepared the original scene. Thus, objecting to it, he yelled (via The Telegraph):

“Meryl, why don’t you stop carrying the flag for feminism and just act the scene.”

Not only this but Hoffman even slapped his female co-star in real life, of which a scene got shot and was included in the final cut of the film, documenting ‘spousal abuse’ in its most accurate form. In the actor’s defense: he was going through a divorce in real life at the time, and thus, ended up lashing out at Streep instead.

Nonetheless, even though he apologized later on for his outrageous performance, it seems it would be quite a long time (perhaps never, even) before both Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman decide to work together once again.

2. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy

For something that happened during the shoot of Mad Max: Fury Road, out of all the entries in this list, this one has to be the most bad-blooded one, considering how Charlize Theron ended up asking for protection on-set, all because of Hollywood heartthrob Tom Hardy.

Apparently, the Venom actor once showed up on the sets three hours late while the Atomic Blonde actress sat there waiting for him for most of the morning, completely dressed up in her uncomfortable sweltering ‘War Rig’ along with full makeup and costume. As camera operator Mark Goellnicht shared in his book Blood, Sweat & Chrome:

“Tom turns up, and he walks casually across the desert. She jumps out of the War Rig, and she starts swearing her head off at him, saying, ‘Fine the f****** c*** a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew’.”

Furthermore, an outraged Theron even yelled at Hardy, “How disrespectful you are!” which led to her co-star completely losing it:

“He charged up to her and went, ‘What did you say to me?’ He was quite aggressive. She really felt threatened, and that was the turning point.”

The film might have been appealing to fans, but to Charlize Theron, the shoot was nothing less than ‘horrible’.

3. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn

Four Christmases is the only movie that Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn have starred in together, and even that didn’t turn out to be pleasant for the pair. According to reports, the Hollywood co-stars never saw eye-to-eye, and that too, to an extreme degree. As claimed by The Daily News:

“Vince rolls onto set in the morning looking like he just came in from a night out, while Reese will arrive early looking camera-ready. Then Reese tries to force Vince into blocking out each scene and running through their lines as Vince tries to convince her that he’s an ad-libber and wants to play around and see where the scene goes. She’s a one-take perfectionist and Vince likes to try it a few different ways. Sometimes Vince will be standing behind her and he has this look on his face that he just wants to kill her!”

Perhaps it is only for the better that Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn never worked together after that, for if they had, something dreadful could have happened! (pun intended… or not?!)

4. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

This might be the most startling entry in this list considering the spectacular chemistry that Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling shared not only on-screen but off-screen as well, given how they ended up in a relationship in real life with Gosling calling McAdams one of his “greatest girlfriends of all time”.

However, if talking about when the pair first met on the sets of The Notebook, it’s only true. According to what director Nick Cassavetes shared with VH1 (via Lainey Gossip), the pair really didn’t get along on-set at first:

“Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, “Nick come here.” And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, “Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?” I said, “What?” He says, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.”

Continuing, the filmmaker shared how the duo ended up on good terms which led to the movie finally being shot and made into a spectacular masterpiece.

“We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other. I walked out. At that point, I was smoking cigarettes. I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, “All right let’s do this.” And it got better after that, you know? They had it out… I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open. The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”

Thus was the epic film shot, and Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were officially titled to be one of the most shipped ‘power couples’ of Hollywood. (Happy ending?)

5. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny

Last but not least are Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. This one was by far the most troublesome pair in Hollywood, considering how they had to tolerate each other throughout the arduous process of making 217 episodes of their series together, The X-Files.

Not only did things start terribly between the duo, but instead of making up and getting better, it only ended up going further downhill as the series progressed. Back in 2008, Duchovny described his relationship with his co-star in an interview with Metro, saying:

“Familiarity breeds contempt. It’s nothing to do with the other person. All that fades away and you’re just left with the appreciation and love for the people you’ve worked with for so long. We used to argue about nothing. We couldn’t stand the sight of each other.”

Anderson further ratified her TV series’ co-star’s comment on their relationship, telling The Guardian:

“I mean, yes, there were definitely periods when we hated each other. Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time. It was intense, and we were both pains in the arse for the other at various times.”

Turns out that not everything Hollywood shows on the big screen is real!
