Elden Ring is often described as one of the most difficult Soulslike games of late and the FromSoftware title has frustrated many players with the difficulty of certain bosses. One such boss, who we should point out is optional, has proven to be quite the handful and has seen many a player fall foul of the Demi-God.
The boss in question is, of course, Malenia, Blade of Miquella who is widely known as one of the most powerful empyreans. The twin sister of Miquella, Malenia can be found at the bottom of the dungeon within Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. After defeating Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree, players can descend the elevator, if they so choose, to take on the Blade of Miquella.

For those players who have attempted to take on Malenia in Elden Ring and struggled, don’t despair. It wouldn’t be a Soulslike game if there weren’t infuriating bosses who seem to be overpowered and ready to hand out a beating to all comers. However, there are some tips and tricks available which may prove decisive in any future encounters to cover both phases of the battle.
How to Avoid Waterfowl Dance
The mere mention of Malenia’s signature move no doubt fills many players with absolute dread. The attack which features many times throughout a fight sees the character rear into the air before unleashing a barrage of attacks, whilst closing the gap on players. If that wasn’t enough, there comes another round of attacks and a final AoE slashing attack to deal with. Phew.

Take advantage of staggerability / Melee strategy
In phase one of the battle, Malenia is extremely susceptible to this and if players use the Bloodhound’s Step Ash of War, then this will aid in avoiding the majority of her attacks. Players should note that colossal weapons can be used to interrupt Melania’s attacks in phase one and weapon abilities like the Blasphemous Blade’s can knock her and keep her down.
There’s every opportunity to get a couple of critical hits landed along with some jump attacks to stagger Malenia. However, if colossal weapons don’t work for you, then you could try a dual Katana build, as Malenia is susceptible to Bleed.
Spellcaster Strategy
Not all the combat has to be up close and personal in Elden Ring. Those who prefer to keep a bit of distance may find this battle slightly easier. However, we should note that the speed at which Malenia closes gaps may make it difficult to find some space for spell-casting.
The best times of spells are those that can be cast quickly and especially those that can inflict posture damage. With this players should be looking at Gravity sorceries or even Magic Glintblade or Carian Phalanx. The latter two spells can be timed so that they land when Malenia closes the distance.
Ranged Strategy
Players who are looking at battling Malenia at range are recommended to use either a Greatbow or the Hand Ballista. In phase one, Malenia is highly susceptible to being knocked down and these weapons could prove to be a player’s greatest advantage.
In phase two, Malenia can’t be knocked down any longer however, she is still vulnerable to factors like Bleed and Frostbite. So it makes sense that for this phase, players should be looking to equip arrows and throwable items to take advantage of this. Recommendations are for Bloodbone and Coldbone Arrows.
Bring a Friend
One of the best strategies for beating Malenia is working as a pair. Although some players have stated about working as a trio to take this boss on, this unfortunately means players have to deal more damage and there are more people for her to leech health from.
Instead of this, working as a pair and equipped with heavy weapons means that she will have difficulty focusing on one character and there will be more chances to stagger. Not only this but if Malenia has focused an attack on one player, the other player can interrupt this without any issue. It may take slightly longer to wear her down but it will be worth it if gets you the win!
No doubt many fans have spent a few hours frustrated at the difficulty of this demi-god and how she has never known defeat. Whilst it is clear that Malenia is one of the most troubling bosses in Elden Ring, despite being optional to the game, hopefully, the tricks and tips provided can give players the edge they need to overcome this adversary.
