Call of Duty and Fortnite are perhaps two of the most popular names you’ll hear in the video game industry. Both of these universes bring players in with the hope of action-packed gameplay, along with the freedom to personalize their playstyles based on each season and setting they’re diving into.
However, no matter how great a game, sometimes it can feel a bit much like playing the same thing over and over again. That’s where other games come in, and here are five of the most unique games you should try out if you haven’t already.
5. Return of the Obra Dinn
At first glance, Return of the Obra Dinn seems like a work of art that’s not supposed to be played. Instead, you’d likely be admiring every frame and character that’s been designed and developed with care. However, the world of Return of the Obra Dinn carefully crafts the journey of a detective who’s about to make a breakthrough… until new hurdles keep showing up.
Every frame in this game is clue enough to keep following a trail of wrongdoings after a ship has witnessed something dreadfully awry going on. This is one of those games that make you appreciate its art direction and clever writing the more you dive into it.
4. Goat Simulator
Weird, funny, and all over the place, Goat Simulator has you step into the limbs of a goat who is here to cause absolute havoc. From using jetpacks to getting a high score for how annoying you can be, this open-world game is a creative experiment coming out of the minds of some of the most absurd game design principles.
There are more games in the series, and the chaos never refuses to end. Give them all a try, but remember to start with this one. Ever great story of a villainous goat has humble beginnings.
3. Pools
In our review of Pools, one thing stood out; how this game used some common fears like Claustrophobia and Agoraphobia to build some of the most eerie levels in a game you’ll ever experience. There’s mostly just walking here, but the audio and visuals alone make it worth the trip.
Some of these spaces may seem extremely familiar, but the sense of dread and isolation you start to feel as you explore this game is something that remains within long after you’ve completed the entire game.
2. Portal
One of the classiest games in the first-person shooter community is all about using a gun that creates portals, and solving puzzles that require you to think in creative ways. Both, Portal and Portal 2 are remarkable experiences that tell a fascinating story about a science experiment.
Portal has game mechanics that, to this day, feel fresh and unique despite of having simple controls and a linear progression. This one’s a good break from the usual adrenaline-rush gamers tend to find in first-person shooters.
1. Death Stranding
As huge, complex, and fascinating, Death Stranding is a game that’s not for everyone. Hideo Kojima’s creativity saw its peak with this one, where a complicated world is trying to find a silver lining, all thanks to Sam Porter, a delivery guy with a lot of ambition.
Sam’s journey isn’t a lonely one. He’s accompanied by a fetus that can detect ghosts. Yes, it’s likely that the more I write about the game, the more confused you’ll feel. Instead, go ahead and give this one a try. Deep down, this game holds an important message about human connections and why they matter so much.
A Quick Way to Make Fortnite and Call of Duty Feel Unique
Instead of playing the usual Fortnite Battle Royale, try stepping into other modes (such as LEGO Fortnite) and maps/modes created by the community.
As for Call of Duty, spice up your playstyle with new loadouts and multiple modes that test your wit and strategy against other players. For instance, Plunder and Zombies are two modes that are slightly different versions of the usual multiplayer modes.
