The Royal Tenenbaums earned much praise and positive reviews from the film community and audience for its unique style and ensemble cast. Both Wes Anderson and Gene Hackman garnered praise, the director for his meticulous direction and the lead star for his multi-dimensional portrayal.

However, the set of the movie was far from a happy place for both the director and actor often crashed with each other as revealed by the Far Out Magazine. Certain reports even allege that the Oscar-winning actor even went as far as to call his director a ‘c**t’ while on set. The result of this confrontation was that the Marvel star Bill Murray, who himself has had a reputation for being hard to work with, had to come in between to rescue Anderson.

Despite having had a hard time on set, Anderson still fondly recalls his memories from on set.

It was revealed by Wes Anderson that Gene Hackman objected to the significantly less amount of money he was making by starring in The Royal Tenenbaums. And the creative differences they had further made their relationship bad enough. But despite it all, Hackman being the legend he is, really gave it his all for the movie, a fact that Anderson is really grateful for (via INSIDER).

The director even once stated (via Far Out Magazine),

“He was one of the things that pulled everybody into this movie. Anytime we are together and talk about the movie we always talk about him… He’s a huge force and I really enjoyed working with him. Even though he was very challenging with me, it was very exciting seeing him launch into these scenes”.

And so keeping aside their differences, Anderson proved that he is in fact not only an exceptional director but also a very humble human being.
