Daniel Radcliffe is still only 34, making him seem too young to be taking on dull, tedious, or otherwise complex roles. But since he played Harry Potter in the movie series of the same name at the age of 12, his career has taken a number of unexpected turns.

The actor, who became famous after taking on the role in the Harry Potter film series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, is often questioned about his unusual preference for movie roles. The 34-year-old actor has a history of choosing riskier independent films and stage productions over safe blockbusters, playing characters as diverse as a haunted lawyer and a beat poet.

Well, the actor did acknowledge that he would never again enjoy the same level of fame in a 2015 interview, but he also admitted that he felt tremendous pressure to live up to Harry Potter’s success.

But since the release of the last and final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he has opted for a variety of roles rather than sticking to box office darlings or blockbusters.

Daniel Radcliffe’s ‘Weird’ Interview Raised Eyebrows

Daniel Radcliffe has been bringing J.K. Rowling’s fantastical world to life on the big screen for more than ten years, enthralling audiences with his charm, bravery, and undeniable talent. He appeared to be a brave wizard, but even he occasionally seems to be troubled by the ghosts of his prior box-office triumphs.

He is different from other movie stars though. We do not mean that in the usual corny sense. Radcliffe is odd, but a good odd, as he himself stated. Consider the evidence: His roles have varied since the end of the Harry Potter series in 2011.

He portrayed characters such as a demon-transforming man (Horns), a singing corporate climber (How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, on stage), a confused about his s*xuality poet (Kill Your Darlings), among others.

These were the professional decisions of a budding independent actor, as he shared what propelled him into his film preferences:

“No, I don’t really have mainstream tastes. People do ask me, ‘Why do you choose such weird movies?’ but I don’t think they’re weird, they’re just stories I’m interested in. Isn’t having weird tastes good, though? I think so. I think that’s better than always wanting to play the handsome hero. You think I’m weird? I’ll take that.”

Daniel Radcliffe Had A Huge Amount To Prove’

With names like Michael Jackson, Macaulay Culkin, Amanda Bynes, and Lindsay Lohan on the list, it is hard to blame Daniel Radcliffe for being aware of how child stars are perceived.

“I had a huge amount to prove … proving that you can be a young actor and not be a complete f—ing disaster when you grow up. That is the … image that people have of young actors. There are a huge number of child actors who grow up fine. I’m sure I’ll never hit that kind of commercial peak again but very, very few people will.”

In addition, Radcliffe used the occasion to refute a regrettable myth that circulated online following an interview he gave to Playboy magazine. In it, the actor admitted to m*sturbating. Indeed, he claimed to have “started early – before my teens,” a statement that undoubtedly inspired a number of naughty social media posts.

Later, being puzzled, but not furious, he said:

“I didn’t say I wanked on set! ‘Yes, I w*nked a lot when I was a teenager,’ but clearly I didn’t mean on set. Can you make this clear for me: I was not w*nking during the filming of Potter – I managed to restrain myself until I got home.”

Well, the last time we saw the Horns actor on screen was in Eric Appel’s 2022 biographical parody film, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It received favorable reviews, garnering praise in particular for Radcliffe’s performance, and was nominated for two Emmy Awards.

The film is streaming on The Roku Channel.
