Over the last few years sci-fi superhero genre has taken over the film industry. While DC and Marvel are considered to be the biggest franchise in the genre, the scope has enlarged with the increasing popularity of shows and more film series. However, the cinematic universes established by DC and Marvel Studios are still the biggest franchises in the genre and are also known for bringing a big change in the industry.

However, one thing that is still considered the same among the two studios and their cinematic universe is the years-long rivalry. Both DC and Marvel are known to have a rivalry, which has continued as they took the silver screen to bring their superheroes to life. And while both of them have a massive following and multiple films under their name, DCU has still far behind its rival when it comes to the box office collection.

Marvel Has Top Three Spots in Biggest Opening Weekends

There has long been a debate among the DC and Marvel fans over their own series being the best superhero franchise. And the competition among the series continued even after they entered the film industry. Fans of both DCU and MCU have been consistently debating over which franchise is best.

While both of them have put out some of the best films not in the genre but also in Hollywood, MCU has been more successful. The franchise has released more than 30 films and multiple TV shows, including special segments. Filmmaker Zack Snyder has also introduced fans to the great DC movies as he tried establishing the DCEU, and fans loved the dark and gritty tone of the franchise that the MCU lacked.

However, one thing in which DCU is still far behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe is its performance at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, Avengers: Endgame not only has the highest domestic opening weekend among the MCU movies but also holds the record for the biggest opening in Hollywood, with $357.1 million.

The 2019 film is followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home and Infinity War with $260 million and $257 million, respectively. Iron Man 3 is the tenth Marvel film to have the highest domestic opening weekend with $174 million, which is still much higher than DCEU’s highest domestic box office opening weekend.

DC is Still Far Behind the MCU at the Box Office

Though there are several issues in the DC Universe, the franchise has still managed to stand out from its competitor MCU. Zack Snyder attempted to establish the franchise with the 2013 Henry Cavill starrer Man of Steel. The filmmaker continued the franchise with the following films, Batman V Superman and Justice League, along with other movies in the movies.

So far, the franchise has released 14 movies, with the 15th film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still to release later this year. While some of the films have been highly praised by DC fans and critics, these films were not as big at the box office as Marvel movies.

The 2016 film in the franchise, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, has the highest domestic opening record with $166 million at the box office, which is quite less than Iron Man 3. It is followed by Suicide Squad and Man of Steel with $133 million and $116 million, respectively. The most recently released film, The Flash, also did not have big openings at the box office.

The Flash made $55 million in its opening weekend, taking the eighth spot on the list. However, with James Gunn taking over the DC Studios and planning to establish a new DCU, it is finally expected to catch up to the success of the MCU. The filmmaker has already announced initial projects and started working on the first film of the franchise Superman: Legacy.
