The latest installment of the Indiana Jones franchise has stolen all the recent spotlight in Hollywood. The new sequel titled, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold, and co-written by Mangold. One of the many reasons why the film has gathered so much attention is because it will officially be the last film that will have Harrison Ford playing the role of the clever archaeologist.
Dial of Destiny, the movie is set in 1969, at the height of the space rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. Indiana Jones is seen on a mission as he is keen to uncover criminal conduct concealed in the space programs because many of the scientists involved in them have Nazi origins.
Director-Producer George Lucas was not bothered by Harrison Ford’s age
The only movie in the series that isn’t written or directed by Steven Spielberg or George Lucas, but instead has both of them o board as executive producers is Dial of Destiny. Plans for a fifth Indiana Jones movie date back to the late 1970s, when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg agreed to make five Indiana Jones films with Paramount Pictures. In reference to the lengthy production of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harrison Ford stated in April 2008 that he would reprise his role as Indiana Jones for a fifth film if it did not take another twenty years to develop.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull introduced Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams, the character was originally slated to be the star of a fifth movie, but producer Lucas later opted against it since he did not have a problem with the original star’s age.
“And it’s not like Harrison is even old. I mean, he’s 65 and he did everything in this movie. The old chemistry is there, and it’s not like he’s an old man. He’s incredibly agile; he looks even better than he did 20 years ago, if you ask me.”
At least as far as Harrison Ford, the franchise’s veteran lead actor, is concerned, Indiana Jones 5 will be the last movie in the series. Given his advanced age, Ford, who is 80 years old, will no longer be appearing in the movie series.
Harrison Ford has decided to let go of the Indiana Jones franchise
Harrison Ford shared some unexpected but painful information with Variety during an interview about his most cherished project, the more than 40-year-old Indiana Jones film series. According to Ford, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will highlight his advanced age and attempt to provide a satisfying conclusion that will bring the decades-long saga to a fitting close.
“No. It’s time for me to grow up. Six years ago, I thought maybe we ought to take a shot at making another one. And I wanted it to be about age because I think that rounds out the story that we’ve told and we brought it to the right place.”
The first four films in the Indiana Jones franchise were directed by Steven Spielberg, while the upcoming fifth and final film is now being directed by James Mangold. With an estimated $581 million budget, the franchise’s box office earnings after global distribution reached $1.9 billion.
