Taz Skylar Talks About The Translation Of The Character Of Sanji

During an interview, Taz Skylar revealed that one of his biggest concerns when playing the character of Sanji was to make sure that there is nothing lost in the translation from the manga to the live-action version of One Piece. He went on to elaborate on this, stating that since they do not have the liberty to showcase every single thing that happens in the source material, frame by frame, they have to interpret it the best they can.

“I think we had a lot of conversations about how everything’s a translation. Like, I had a lot of images of Sanji on my wall that were from the anime. And everything is a translation, because it can’t be frame-by-frame. But I can interpret everything that he does, everything that I see that he does, and put it into what I deem to be a translation into live action, because essentially, it’s a different language. It’s no longer 2D, it’s 3D, so like innately there is a translation there.” he stated.

Skylar mentioned that despite this, he has confidence in himself that he has done justice to the character, being able to understand his action and translate them onscreen to the best of his abilities, adding that he studied Sanji thoroughly, having pictures of him from the anime all over his walls. He even talked about whether or not they change a key trait in Sanji’s character.

Has Sanji’s Character Been Made More Tame For The Live-Action One Piece?

Taz Skylar explained that he truly tried to understand the deeper meaning behind Sanji’s actions rather than playing a two-dimensional copy of him from the anime. He went on to talk about how one of the key aspects of his character, the fact that he is a woman chaser, has much more to do with the women in his life growing up than just being a funny trait to make him more entertaining. He mentioned that this could be the reason that Sanji cares so deeply about women.

“I think for me, it came down to caring. As in, the background that he has with women in terms of the relationship he had with his mother, the relationship he had with his sister, the way that they interacted with him as opposed to the way that his brothers and his father used to interact with him. That to me, speaks volumes about why he may have a certain relationship with women in general and how we may react to it. In the sense that I don’t have to question at all why he cares so much about women. And that’s what I was hanging on to throughout it.” he stated.

Skylar then went on to say that rather than looking at this trait as something creepy and perverted, it is seen more as something much deeper and heartfelt. He added that he really wanted this to translate well in the live-action series of One Piece, adding that he did his best to do justice to this character.
