Being actor James Brolin’s son, Josh Brolin was exposed to the lavish life of Hollywood at a young age. However, that doesn’t mean he didn’t work hard or face the struggles of being a budding actor. The actor’s first notable role came in 1985’s The Goonies and then, he was shortlisted for the role of Tom Hanson in the series 21 Jump Street, but in the end, the role went to Johnny Depp.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Brolin witnessed a sharp decline in his popularity. The shift in his career came in 2007 when he played the lead role in No Country for Old Men (2007). Since then, the actor has consistently proved his versatility with his performances. The actor once talked about his worst audition which was so intense it left everyone shocked.
Josh Brolin talked about his most intense audition
In 2013, actor Josh Brolin was joined by fellow actors Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, and Michael B. Jordan, in order to have a candid conversation about their careers. During the interview, Brolin was asked about his “strangest audition,” the actor then replied (via The Hollywood Reporter),
“I did an audition for [1989’s] The Fly 2. I was living in New York at the time, and I went in there, and he’s in a cocoon, transforming into a fly. So I walked in, and I started reading. You do the voice, and you’re like, [choking sounds] you know, doing your thing. And I ended up on the floor, frothing at the mouth. I got back to my apartment, and there was already a message on my machine from my agent that said: ‘What the f**k did you do in there? You scared them.’ I said, ‘Well, did I get it?’ That was the worst audition I ever did.”
The Fly II was indeed a strange film. A sequel to the 1986 film The Fly, the film follows the story of a scientist who became a human-fly hybrid because of a failed experiment.
Josh Brolin was told that he is the worst auditioner
Further in the interview, Brolin revealed that Meryl Poster, who was the co-president of production for Miramax Films, told him that he and Benicio Del Toro were the worst auditioners they’ve ever come across,
“I literally started filming my own auditions. [Then-president of production] Meryl Poster at Miramax 10 years ago said, ‘You and Benicio Del Toro were notoriously the worst auditioners we’ve ever seen.’ [Laughs.]”
The modern audience knows Brolin for his work as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as Cable in the Deadpool franchise. His ability to seamlessly transition between complex, serious characters and intimidating villains has made him a well-known actor in the industry.
