Considered to be the greatest actor that has ever appeared in front of a camera, Robert De Niro became a household name in no time, and his iconic portrayals of American gangster needs no introduction. Needless to say, the actor had an immensely successful career as an actor. Being in the film industry for over five decades, he has worked and excelled in both leading and supporting roles in almost every genre there is.
The Cape Fear actor is now 80 years old and he is still active as an actor. For his outstanding performances, Robert De Niro has won 2 Academy Awards, a feat that would make any celebrity call themselves the best in the world. However, there’s one genre of film that De Niro finds difficult to work in, and feels that certain actors are better than him.
Robert De Niro Feels Comedy Genre is Difficult To Work In
Robert De Niro’s name is bound to come up, whenever we are talking about some of the greatest actors who have worked in several genres of films where he has given a remarkable performance. However, the actor himself states that there is one genre of film that is extremely difficult for him to give an iconic performance.
During a segment of Actors Roundtable by The Hollywood Reporter, featuring some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Robert De Niro, Adam Sandler, Adam Driver, Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx, and Shia LaBeouf. The host said, “Dying is easy, comedy is hard. True or False?” The Untouchables actor agreed with the statement, saying that “comedy is difficult,” and that there are other actors who are better than him in that genre.
“Comedy’s more difficult, yes, I can’t do what Billy Crystal does, Eddie Murphy, you, Adam [Sandler], but I can do other things. I mean, I like to think that I work and say in Marty’s movies just situations that are funny in and of themselves, which is like life. You know, there are so many situations we see, we’re in a-we’re in a situation all of a sudden, I wish, we could have filmed this or in this situation is so crazy, you know but it’s real.”
While Robert De Niro found comedy to be extremely difficult, he shared how working alongside Martin Scorsese was extremely tempting, as both of them were keen on experimenting in certain scenes, which often led to some iconic scenes.
Robert De Niro Is All Praises For Martin Scorsese
Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese have done a total of ten feature films and one short film together since 1973. In the same segment of Actors Roundtable by The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said he will never change anything that he has done in Scorsese’s films. He praised the renowned filmmaker, that he is open to experimenting, something which other directors do not prefer to do in their films.
“No, I mean the only thing say would Marty Scorsese working with him is that you get closer to saying that whatever you want to do. You can actually try and do it, and-and, maybe it’ll happen, maybe it’ll work, so if you had an idea of something, say look let me just try that.”
“I say, Marty let me know, let’s just try you never know and so you’d say something with some directors you don’t even go there, you don’t even say it’s too much work to even attempt to bring it up to them to do that. With Marty, it’s, this is well doing what if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work so that’s a great feeling of freedom and it’s great.”
Together, these two men have made incredible, genre-defying, influential, and realistic films that have broken the boundaries of filmmaking and storytelling, leading to movies that a person would never forget.
