Taz Skylar, who portrays Sanji in Netflix’s highly successful live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime, is one of them.

Vinsmoke Sanji, a character who made his debut in episode 5 of Netflix’s One Piece, skillfully preparing a True Bluefin Sauté but gets kicked out of the kitchen by Zeff when he goes off-menu. This scene hints at Sanji’s relationship with his father-figure Zeff.

However, during an interview, One Piece star, Taz Skylar shared his approach to Sanji and revealed a dark secret about the character’s relationship that will tug at your heartstrings.

Taz Skylar Discusses His Character’s Appreciation for Women, Leading to a Dark Secret Revelation

In the conversation with GameRader, Sanji actor Taz Skylar discussed his character’s appreciation for women in the live-action series and also mentioned his efforts in both physical training and culinary skills for the role. He said:

“And it was the same with the way that he reacts or the way that he interacts with women, there was a translation to be had. And I think at the root of it, the root of any reaction is why you’re reacting like that. And I think for me, it came down to caring.”

He continues:

“As in, the background that he has with women in terms of the relationship he had with his mother, the relationship he had with his sister, the way that they interacted with him as opposed to the way that his brothers and his father used to interact with him. That to me, speaks volumes about why he may have a certain relationship with women in general and how we may react to it. In the sense that I don’t have to question at all why he cares so much about women. And that’s what I was hanging on to throughout it.”

Skylar said that Sanji’s childhood and how his mother and sister treated him compared to his father and brothers have a big influence on his attitudes and behavior towards women.

Sanji’s Complex Relationship with His Father

Sanji despised his biological father due to neglect and mistreatment for not receiving enhancements like his siblings. Despite his disinterest in the family’s warrior and scientific pursuits, he was subjected to rigorous training from a young age by his father, Judge, who wanted him to join the elite Germa 66 military force.

Judge allowed Sanji’s brothers to harm him and even imprisoned him at one point. However, Judge provided food and occasional opportunities for escape, as long as Sanji didn’t reveal his true identity as Judge’s son.

While being mistreated by his brothers and father, Sanji was always deeply attached to his mother, often bringing her food. After her death, Sanji pursued a career as a chef to honor her memory, against Judge’s wishes. Learning the cause of her death initially troubled him, but Reiju (Sanji’s elder sister) reassured him that their mother had been genuinely happy.
