Given the history of Martin Scorsese‘s statements about cinema,  he has once again shared his opinion on the ‘danger’ cinema might be in, due to the comic book movies as it is somewhat convincing the audience to be what cinema really is.

In a recent GQ interview, he mentioned,

“The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture,” said Scorsese regarding the creation of comic book films. “Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those – that’s what movies are.”

He further mentioned that the audience has already started to believe in the idea that comic book movies are what cinematic artistry is, however, the concept is otherwise.

“They already think that. Which means that we have to fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level.”

Urging the movie enthusiasts to preserve the cinematic heritage, he mentioned,

“It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we’ve got to save cinema.”

Nolan is renowned for crafting iconic masterpieces in the filmmaking world. He further asserted that “manufactured content” is not cinema seemingly referring to Marvel movies.

In the same interview, The Irishman director acknowledged the shift in the filmmaking world as big-budget movies are making quite an impact with franchises taking over most of the content shown now. This drastic change seemed to have somewhat been influenced by superhero franchises like Marvel Studios that continue to dominate the cinematic world. He shared,

“What I mean is that, it’s manufactured content. It’s almost like AI making a film. And that doesn’t mean that you don’t have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork. But what does it mean? What do these films – what will it give you? Aside from a kind of consummation of something and then eliminating it from your mind, your whole body, you know? So what is it giving you?”

With comic book movies continuing to lead the charts, the real essence of cinema is drastically fading which is what worries the filmmaker.

However, it is to be noted that Nolan himself has directed three comic book movies for DC Studios, The Dark Knight trilogy. Of course, he still has plenty of incredible movies under his belt including his recent hit, Oppenheimer which broke numerous box-office records.
