Payday 3 has only been out for a few days as it launched on September 21, a decade after Payday 2 launched and it hasn’t been an easy ride. The game had a disastrous launch and is facing multiple issues such as server crashes, matchmaking issues, and more that have frustrated the community. The developers at Starbreeze Studios have been working on the issue and things looked better for a few days.

However, server outages have started emerging again and since the game requires players to always be online to play, this has resulted in negative reviews of the game on Steam. In between all that, there are reports that Payday 3 could be looking to change its “always online” requirement with an offline mode.

Payday 3 is a team-focused online heist game but it is also possible to play solo with AI, however, it requires the player to be online. Since there is a need to be always online, server crashes are also preventing this even when playing individually. The company has now released a statement that it is looking to make the game less dependent on online services or maybe remove it in the future.

The company stated that the matchmaking software encountered an unexpected error and couldn’t handle the large number of players, causing “an unrecoverable situation for Starbreeze’ third-party matchmaking partner.” The statement reads,

“A new version of the matchmaking server software was gradually deployed across all regions leading to improved performance. However, a software update made by the partner during late Sunday again introduced instability to the matchmaking infrastructure. The partner continues to work to improve and stabilize PAYDAY 3s online systems.”

The company also said that this issue “did not manifest during Technical Betas or Early Access due to the specificity of rapid user influx and load-balancing.” It added that the developers are looking at all the options for the game both short- and long-term. It further stated,

‘In the short-term, this means Starbreeze’ focus is to ensure the player experience. In the long-term, this means evaluating a new partner for matchmaking services and making PAYDAY 3 less dependent on online services.”

Starbreeze CEO, Tobias Sjögren also said it is disappointing to see the players face all these issues but they are confident about Payday 3, adding that the company has lots of work to do to regain the trust of the community.

Payday 3 was always going to require players to be online, even in single-player mode, if they wanted to play the game and it was met with criticism at the moment. However, the game still launched with hype from the Payday community but failed to live up to its fanbase’s expectations.
