Secret Wars has got the rumor mill working overtime. Thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, fans are speculating about the various characters that might come back in the Avengers sequel. One of them could be Josh Brolin’s Thanos.
Speaking to Digital Spy, the Infinity War alum has stated where he stands on the return of Thanos in the MCU. Brolin received widespread critical acclaim for his performance as Thanos, the Mad Titan hunting for Infinity Stones, in Infinity War and Endgame. Brolin provided the voice work for the character and also portrayed him through motion capture.
Secret Wars might see 2 Avengers villains fight
When asked about his eagerness to return to the role, Brolin said:
“It’s not that I don’t have an interest. They have their own trajectory that they’re worrying about, and if they want me to do it, I would do it I’m sure.”
Given that the Endgame actor is ready to return to the MCU, the perfect re-entry point for his character would be the upcoming Avengers sequel, Secret Wars.
Kang the Conqueror is shaping up to be the next villain in the MCU. While What If… gave the audience a hilarious take on how an Ultron/Thanos fight could play out, Secret Wars could approach the question of the 2 Avengers nemeses fighting it out with a lot more seriousness.
Thanos and Kang both have an obsession with order. However, they have different approaches to the idea of it. Thanos looks at order as a necessary evil, a burden that requires the “strongest will’ to be executed fairly. Kang, on the other hand, has a much more selfish approach to power, parading his title of the ‘Conqueror” without remorse.
While unlikely, it is a plausible scenario
Given that the combined actions of Sylvie and Wanda have blown the multiverse wide open, Kang, through his conquest of multiple timelines, may come across a Thanos that reigned victorious over the Avengers. While Thanos beat the Avengers in Infinity War, he lost his army and the battle in Endagme, being dusted by Tony Stark. But given that scenario was just 1 out of 14,000,605, the chances of a victorious Thanos, who has successfully reshaped the universe, meeting Kang are exponentially high.
Watching the two despots duke it out in a rogue timeline would be a delight for old and new fans of the franchise alike. Thanos has proved to be more than a competent fighter, taking on the combined might of Avengers, Guardians, Sorcerors, and Wakandans. Kang, on the other hand, has allegedly slain the Avengers many times over and could end up being more than a match for the Mad Titan.
Avengers; Secret Wars is slated to release on May 7th, 2027.
