Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had a phenomenal response, and it also became the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive with sold over 2.5 million copies in 24 hours. There are many additions to the game, like the wingsuit and the fast travel ability.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows players to play as Peter, Miles, and Venom (for a single mission). Among the many additions to the game, there are also some things which carry over from the first game. One is the ability to play as Mary Jane in some missions.

Said missions were also present in the last game, and they saw the player using stealth and sneaking around enemies. Fans were not very accepting of those missions in the previous game. But, despite all the negative sentiment, Insomniac chose to include them this time around as well.

Recently, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 director, Bryan Intihar, defended the studio’s judgement not just to include them this time around, but also to make Mary Jane a lethal force to be reckoned with in the latest game.

Recently, in an exclusive interview with IGN, Bryan Intihar shared his vision of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. A part of the interview also saw him talking about the infamous Mary Jane stealth missions. Intihar mentioned that the studio was well aware that people disliked them.

As per him, the studio, and the creative team there was deliberation over eliminating them from the sequel. Intihar said:

We had two choices. We could say, ‘All right, we’ll make it easy and just not do it.’ And everybody would go, ‘Great. No MJ missions.’ Or we could say…

Talking about why the studio went ahead and included them anyway. Intihar spoke about the fact that the team did not want to ditch the challenge. He continued:

‘Hey, we’ve talked about showing the world from all different angles. We’re going to make her moments better. We’re going to take on the challenge. We’re going to make people like playing as her.’

Going ahead, he further discussed the studio had to make the character not take the backseat like the previous game. The team wanted the character to be more proactive. Intihar also shared that the fact that Mary Jane’s character is being perceived as overpowered doesn’t really bother him. He said:

And if she’s a little OP, I don’t give a shit. She’s fine. I don’t care.

The Probable Reason Mary Jane Was Given the Stun Gun in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Intihar also said that they wanted to project Mary Jane as a strong, competent, capable hero. The feature to let players control Mary Jane riding her bike was also discussed. But it was later scrapped.

That may be the reason why Mary Jane is seen wielding her stun gun in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The stun gun is able to knock out and stun enemies instantly. It is so powerful in the game that enemies who need several hits from Spider-Man can go down immediately.

It is debatable that this was required since Mary Jane is the only playable character without any superpowers. In the last mission of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Mary Jane is also a playable character.

There is a whole segment where she is seen sneaking around one last time and knocking out enemies with her stun gun.

Intihar recalled that in the first game there was a plan in the early stages of the match for Mary Jane to use Peter’s web shooters. The background was that Peter was seriously injured and unable to walk. Jane would support him and encounter enemies in their way. She would then use the web shooters to shoot at the enemies. This feature also didn’t make the final cut of the game.

Although retaining and even overpowering Mary Jane in the latest game may have left fans a little confused, some portions of the title wouldn’t have been as enjoyable with a character who has superpowers.
