After finding success with 2017’s Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig has become a famous personality, propelling her to the upper echelons of the industry. Gerwig continued impressing viewers with her latest success, Barbie. Although she hasn’t collaborated with a streaming platform, she took everyone by surprise with her upcoming film series for Netflix based on The Chronicles of Narnia. But fans are divided over the announcement.
While there’s not much information about how Greta Gerwig plans on adapting C.S. Lewis’ work into a cinematic experience, she will be overseeing the production of two films. Despite the considerable amount of trust in the director’s vision for The Chronicles of Narnia, many fans have polarising opinions about the film.
Will Greta Gerwig Be Able To Do Justice To The Project?
Great Gerwig’s Barbie witnessed phenomenal success, raking in a staggering $1.4 billion. This is probably the reason why Netflix roped in the director to helm The Chronicles of Narnia film. Barbie turned Gerwig from an indie filmmaker to a blockbuster director. Though Barbie was a success, not everyone was impressed by the woke tone of the film. Many fans criticized the film for deviating from the lighthearted tone they expected.

Greta directing Narnia is possibly the worst decision by the studios. I mean alright she made $1B for the the studios with Barbie but that doesn’t doesn’t mean you hand her a classic like that

Netflix’s decision to offer The Chronicles of Narnia to Gerwig was expected. Barbie also marked Gerwig’s venture into mainstream filmmaking. Moreover, working on a fantasy series will be a different experience for Gerwig. The Chronicles of Narnia is a cherished series of children’s fantasy novels.
But will Gerwig’s unique approach work for the remake? Her previous ventures, including Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie, have all showcased female-centric stories with strong lead characters. She could offer a fresh take on key female figures from Narnia, like Lucy and even the White Witch, in a way that hasn’t been seen before. While Gerwig might not be the first person that comes to mind when the topic is Narnia, it could potentially bring a new perspective to the new Chronicles of Narnia series.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Took Inspiration From a Meryl Streep Film
According to Greta Gerwig, her childhood memories of finding damaged toys inspired Weird Barbie. However, she clarified that Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel The Giver also influenced the character.
The story of the novel was set in a dystopian world, showing a community where people transfer their memories to an individual called the Receiver. Each generation has a new Receiver who is mentored by the previous one, who goes on to take the role of the Giver.
The book was made into a film starring Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, and Katie Holmes. In her Rolling Stone interview, Gerwig said that Weird Barbie was similar to the role of the Giver or Receiver, as she was aware of things that others weren’t.
