While she may have forever immortalized herself as The Black Widow with her exceptional performance as a member of The Avengers in the MCU, Scarlett Johansson boasts a very diverse and distinct career in the Hollywood industry. In fact, the actress boasts of several Oscar-nominated films that surpass the expectations of the audience.
One of these films even earned her an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category along with a lot of praise from her fans and critics alike. The film was 2019’s Marriage Story, which also starred Adam Driver as her co-star along with filmmaker Noah Baumbach as the director. But taking this film was one risky choice since she didn’t even read the script before signing up for it.
Scarlett Johansson Didn’t Read The Script Of Marriage Story Before She Signed Up
While the MCU may have kept her busy for the majority of her illustrious career, actress Scarlett Johansson has limited herself to just the cinematic juggernaut. So far, she was been nominated for several awards in the industry, even winning some of them through her performances that even the critics cannot deny.
But none of them were as risky as her decision to play the role of Nicole Barber in 2019’s Comedy/Drama film Marriage Story, a film where the story of the project she had no idea about.

In an interview with Variety, the Lucy actress talked about her decision to choose her role in the aforementioned film. She said that apart from Adam Driver being connected to the project, film director Noah Baumbach was a big reason for deciding to be in the movie when the script wasn’t even properly penned.
She said that she felt the story that Baumbach had in mind resonated with her when she was briefed about the project. Along with that, the director’s exhaustive style of filmmaking was also a great incentive for her choice. She said:
“He will work his actors to an exhaustive state, which is interesting because that’s when weird, kind of interesting stuff happens, You make discoveries that might not be possible if you kind of have your wits about you. Sometimes, I think when you are feeling vulnerable, I don’t know, your walls come down. You end up surprising yourself. I was thankful for that even if it was very tiresome.”
This decision was a lucky draw for the actress as she received an Academy Award nomination along with a ton of praise from friends, critics, and peers alike.

What Was Marriage Story About?
Not only did Johansson receive an Oscar nomination for her role in the film, Marriage Story was nominated for a total of five Academy Awards.
The film tells the tale of Charlie and Nicole Barber, a couple that is on the verge of divorce while balancing their personal lives with professional endeavors. But as time goes on, their situation starts to strain, until one of their lawyers suggests they spend more time together with their son Henry and make their decision.
