Every few years, director Christopher Nolan steps down to create another masterpiece. His contributions to the film industry were acknowledged in 2019 with his appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. As a writer, director, and producer, he has achieved great success in the film industry, crafting visually appealing blockbusters that satisfy viewers’ eyes. His body of work, which includes Memento, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy, is a checkerboard of innovation and adaptation.
But Nolan’s twelfth movie was different from his earlier works; it was a biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer that he wrote and co-produced. With a string of successful films to his credit, he recently sat down for a candid interview with The Atlantic’s Ross Andersen, during which he revealed exciting details about his upcoming project.
The British-American filmmaker has promised that his next film will be just as engaging as his most recent Oscar contender, Oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan Promises His Next Film Will Be as ‘Engaging’ as Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan has long been hailed as a master storyteller due to his extraordinary talent for creating intricate narratives that enthrall audiences. From breaking down time in Interstellar to investigating dreamscapes in Inception, he continually pushes the envelope of what is possible in film. His Oppenheimer, which came out earlier this year, is getting a lot of positive reviews and is in the running for an Oscar as well. What comes next, then?
In his discussion with The Atlantic’s Ross Andersen, Nolan reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to producing another captivating film, citing each new endeavor as a “challenge”. He continued by outlining those difficulties, stating:
“You want every new project to be a challenge, and I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding about what really gives scale to a film. You can look at it in terms of budget. You can look at it in terms of shooting locations. You can look at it in terms of story. I don’t tend to think in those terms. I don’t think about, ‘Oh, I’ve done a big one; now I’ll do a small one’.”
Nevertheless, he stated that Oppenheimer was quite “lean” in his field; the budget was much lower than in some of his earlier works. He even promised that the next project he would be working on would be just as enthralling as the $950.2 million film:
“In my kind of work, Oppenheimer was pretty lean; in terms of budget, it was a lot smaller than some of my other films. I try not to be reactive in my choices. To me, it’s really about finding the story that I want to be engaged with in the years it takes to make a film.”
Well, now we anxiously await more details about Nolan’s next film, as his assurance that it will be just as captivating as Oppenheimer’s sets high expectations.
He Hinted at His Next Film With a Fascinating Oppenheimer Comparison
After Oppenheimer’s enormous success, Christopher Nolan, 53, made a statement about his upcoming movie. The director revealed in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment that, as he moves on to his next project, “part of [him] wants to leave the story behind.”
Nolan said he was grateful to Oppenheimer but hinted that his next project might not be “quite as bleak”. To quote him:
“Part of me wants to leave the story behind…It’s great to be able to sit here and talk to you about the success of the movie. That’s a huge privilege. But the subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”
Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer addresses moral issues related to invention and war ethics as it tells the story of a man who helped create one of the deadliest weapons in human history. After garnering positive reviews and grossing over $950 million globally, the film went on to become the third highest-grossing film of this year, the highest-grossing biographical film, and the highest-grossing World War II-related film.
Oppenheimer is available to rent on Apple TV.
