Artists and their fans usually have a relationship based on mutual respect, admiration, and a love of music. Occasionally, though, this close bond takes a concerning turn and produces something unexpected. Florence Pugh, a gifted actress, is the latest celebrity to come under fire from internet wrath. The Don’t Worry Darling star was rendered speechless when an object hurled from the audience struck her face while she was in Brazil.
The actress, 27, and her co-stars, Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler, and Zendaya, were in São Paulo, Brazil, yesterday for a Comic-Con event where they were promoting Dune: Part Two. The cast members and director Denis Villeneuve posed for pictures before leaving the stage, and the Oscar-nominated actress was startled for a split second when an object struck her face.
In recent months, a number of artists have been the target of unexpected physical attacks from audiences who truly have gone too far.
Florence Pugh Was Hit in the Face During Dune: Part 2 Promotion
Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler, and Zendaya were with Florence Pugh in Brazil promoting Dune: Part Two when she was hit in the face by a flying object. With an Oscar nomination under his belt, the 27-year-old British star was busy this past weekend at a Comic-Con event promoting the upcoming sci-fi epic.
A random object hit the Amy March actress in the face as she posed for a picture with her co-stars and director Denis Villeneuve, according to event footage captured on camera. This incident was the latest in an unsettling pattern of objects being thrown at celebrities by the public.

For a brief moment, Pugh appeared shocked before covering her face with her hands in pain. Before that, she said during her panel discussion that sharing the big screen with her co-stars in the eagerly awaited 2024 epic sci-fi film was “really, really special”. According to the Daily Mail, she revealed:
“I had an amazing time coming in and just hanging around with these people, let alone actually getting to work with them. Coming in here – the power in this room – is because of that first movie, and we felt that when we went on set every single day.”
When asked if she was okay, the actress looked shocked, but she seemed to brush it off and carry on with the photo call.
The perilous path of managing fame while facing a barrage of vile fan insults is not a new story.
When Art Crosses Boundaries: A Look at Recent On-Stage Fan Attacks
There has never been a thinner line between fans and artists because of a concerning trend where celebrities are getting hurt while onstage. In recent months, several artists have unexpectedly been the targets of physical attacks by people who have crossed boundaries.
We learned from The Standard that both Bebe Rexha and Ava Max have suffered injuries in recent months as a result of fans entering their stages uninvited or hurling objects in their faces. Max was viciously smacked by an unknown person while she was entertaining fans in Los Angeles, according to the Daily Mail report. The singer later disclosed that the attacker’s blow to her was so strong that it “scratched the inside of her eye”.
A few days prior to Max’s on-stage hit, Rexha, a fellow musician, was struck in the face by a cell phone that a man threw from the crowd during a concert in New York City (via US Today). The latter was left with a black eye and three stitches as a result of the incident.
Other artists like Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, and P!nk have also been captured on camera reacting to strange objects being thrown at them while performing live. According to The Standard, Taylor Swift was seen cowering as she exited the stage to avoid being hit by multiple bracelets thrown at her.
According to EW, Cardi B took offense at a fan who threw a drink at her while she was performing her hit song Bodak Yellow on July 29 during a show in Las Vegas.
Well, fans need to remember that artists are not just objects to be admired; they are people who wish to express themselves creatively. This concerning experience should serve as a wake-up call for a more considerate and polite fandom that honors artists without jeopardizing their security or welfare.
Note that Warner Bros. has scheduled to release Dune: Part Two on March 1, 2024. Meanwhile, Dune is streaming on Netflix.
