After Hollywood star Johnny Depp stepped out from the biggest controversy of his life, the defamation trial against Amber Heard, his daughter has found herself amid another. In 2023, Lily Rose-Depp starred as popstar Jocelyn in HBO’s The Idol. The promotion behind the series was massive, in addition to a hit number ‘Popular’ by The Weeknd, also starring as Tedros in the series.

The controversy spiraled around Rose-Depp’s bare-bodied scenes throughout the five-episode series. Owing to the regressive plots and poor ratings of the show, The Idol was canceled after its first season. However, a particular scene has amassed great attention, being dubbed as Hollywood’s worst s*x scene.

There were scenes portraying Lily Rose-Depp unclothed and bare-bodied in the Sky Atlantis-produced show. However, the actress has no room for regrets. The 24-year-old star claimed that she is fond of projects that challenge her comfort zone and all of the bare scenes were intentional. The Idol premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and sparked curiosity among viewers.

Lily Rose-Depp’s s*x scene in the episode titled “Double Fantasy” left viewers horrified. The explicit scene portrayed Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye’s Tedros luring Rose-Depp’s Jocelyn into fulfilling his fantasies. The dialogue that followed with the scene had lines that were horrifying and derogatory. Thus, the scene has won a reputation as the worst s*x scene in the history of cinema, per GQ UK

Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem to be a matter of worry for Johnny Depp’s daughter. According to the source, Rose-Depp didn’t consider getting a body double and was keen on enacting all the scenes by herself. She told The Sun

“It’s all me. I love doing that kind of work. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying that kind of work.”

The French-American actress claimed that the scenes were also equally “important” to her as a performer. She immersed herself into Jocelyn’s world and did everything to do justice to her character. Well, that seems to have landed her in a bit of trouble. She clarified that all the scenes were done with her complete consent. Parents, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis haven’t commented on the matter but Rose-Depp notes that they would probably like her clothed at least.

What is The Idol about?

The 2023 drama revolves around young popstar Jocelyn, striving to make a comeback to the glamour world following a mental breakdown. Themed in a typical flashy manner, the show is set within the boundaries of the entertainment industry. While explicit scenes have been a part of modern cinema, The Idol’s explicit content felt a bit too much for fans and critics, many labeling it as regressive and undesirable.

However, performing these scenes was sort of “healing” for Rose-Depp. She said,

“Maybe this makes me, like, a little twisted. But I feel really good after doing scenes like that because there’s something that feels very therapeutic about it to me — and maybe that’s why I like doing this job.”

Written by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and The Weeknd himself, the former had to defend The Idol at the Cannes Film Festival, marking it as “revolutionary.” Several rumors emerged that the show might be based on pop divas like Britney Spears or Madonna. However, the cast and crew have denied any such correlation. The Idol is available to stream on HBO and Max.
