Anticipation for Elden Ring’s upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is at a fever pitch. Fans are growing tired of waiting, and with FromSoft’s radio silence, everyone is in between getting irritated and getting more excited with every passing day.
Since the original announcement of the expansion back in February 2023, nothing more has been said, so details are mighty slim on the ground, leading to all sorts of theories, water cooler talk, and flat-out confusion from fans and professionals alike. It does look like that may be coming to an end shortly though.
Elden Ring’s First Update for Two Years Points to Something Big
Originally noticed by X (formerly known as Twitter) user Ziostorm, Elden Ring’s DLC category has been amended on Steam. While there are no specifics in name or type – it’s down as ‘SteamDB Unknown App 2778580 currently – this is the first time any such update has occurred for the game since its launch, so whilst it’s not a guarantee, as Ziostorm points out, it more than likely is going to be related to the expansion.
This expansion/DLC represents the game’s first major addition, and assuming the theories are correct and it launches next month – which again, this update further adds credence to – then it’ll have been al long two years since the game originally launched, although with the time taken from the developer to craft the experience, it’s likely to be a genre-defining one.
Of course to save any disappointment it would be best to take all of this with a grain of salt, but fans will no doubt be wondering why all of a sudden, after a year of nothing, there are updates about new merchandise next month, a secret update now, and all of this coinciding with the second anniversary of the game’s original launch.
Elden Ring is far from lacking in content, and with players returning to the game in anticipation of the expansion, there arguably isn’t a better time for Shadow of the Erdtree to drop, as the frenzy surrounding its mystery grows.
A new Elden Ring DLC package has just been added to Elden Ring within the files for the first time since launch.

I’m not saying it’s 100% Shadow of the Erdtree but… There’s a pretty good chance it is. pic.twitter.com/1j6HCVfGQo— Ziostorm (@Ziostorm1) January 15, 2024
However, in the meantime, it may be a good idea to run through the Lands Between one more time and sharpen those skills, as we have no doubt that the expansion will be as hard, if not harder, not to mention as satisfying, as the base game when it eventually does drop.
Whether this update ends up being the start of a more concise and obvious marketing push and a series of announcements or not, whatever the update is relating to is something worthwhile, as any additional content of FromSoft’s biggest and best game – bar Bloodborne of course – is always a good thing. What do you think? Is Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree imminent?
