Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus, One Piece, has been at the top of both the anime and manga industry for almost 30 years and is still going strong. The Egghead arc has made some interesting revelations bringing the story one step closer to the end of One Piece. Still, the fans don’t know exactly when will the story end.

However, Oda-san, during one of his interviews, might have already revealed when the One Piece series will end. While the series is nowhere close to revealing what the One Piece treasure is, Oda talking about One Piece’s ending might state that he is onto something.

Eiichiro Oda Believed One Piece Would End in Five Years

During an interview in OVER 100 Miracle Talk that was featured in Weekly Shonen Jump 2022 issue #34 and Weekly Shonen Sunday issue #35, which was later translated by Demifiendrsa on Tumblr, Oda talked to the creator of Detective Conan, Gosho Aoyama, and explained his initial thought process for One Piece ending.

“Truly at the start, I thought ‘ONE PIECE’ would end in five years, and in about a year and a half Luffy’s crew of ten would have gathered together. I thought of it like a video game but I was far too naive! It’s not that I wanted things to keep getting longer, that’s just what ended up happening!!”

Oda explained how he would have brought the entire crew of Straw Hat Pirates together in a matter of a year and a half. But to his naivete, the story got so much love and it became so interesting that he kept it going longer.

Eiichiro Oda Explains When One Piece Will End

During the interview, talking about the ending of One Piece, Oda explained that he has thought about how the series will end, however, the situation around it always keeps changing.

While explaining the ending, Oda stated that the One Piece will end when the treasure of One Piece is found.

He stated:

“I’ve always pictured what the final chapter of ‘ONE PIECE’ would be like, though from time to time, the situation surrounding it changes. It will still be over whenever the One Piece is found in the series, haha. Anyway, this next arc is the final one.”

The ending of One Piece will truly be one of the biggest events in the history of the anime and manga industry. It will bring the long journey of the Straw Hat Pirates to an end with Luffy achieving the King of the Pirates.
