The world of Elden Ring thrives on the nostalgia brought to us by FromSoftware’s older games and all the mechanics that eventually made their way into the open-world experience. However, what if someone were to turn this into a pixel-based RPG that pretty much shaped a lot of gamers’ childhoods?

What looks like one of the most unusual collaborations in the history of video games: a creative user on Reddit gave the world a glimpse of nostalgia mixed with a dose of challenge. The look and feel of older games based on Pokémon have been reincarnated into Elden Ring, and the community has been loving the results so far.

A Learning Process That Turned Into a Neat Work of Art

The collaboration nobody saw coming.

According to user vinsear on Reddit, the process of learning how to build video games seems to have a byproduct that’s being loved by the community. They’ve successfully managed to craft an impressive design of how Elden Ring would look if it were a top-view, turn-based RPG similar to the games based on the Pokémon games. Think of 2004’s Pokémon Emerald, but everything in this world is trying to kill you, yet you thrive as a humble Tarnished.

The user goes on to describe how the game would work. You can use Torrent as your bike, and regional Pokémon are usually mixed character designs of characters from both games. Furthermore, the characters in this world closely resemble those found in Elden Ring’s massive universe.

These aren’t just simple ideas; they’ve been accurately depicted in high-quality screenshots. The closer you look at these, the more convincing they become. While some of the comments have been complaining about the confusing pixel resolution, the user has to say this:

I know the pixel resolution is bugging people and it bugs me too!

I’ve finished Limgrave up to Godrick, but I’m planning to make Liurnia look far more cohesive. Once I have that settled, I may go back and fix Limgrave (unless Nintendo has disposed of me by then)

It turns out that the feedback is certainly being taken into consideration, and the community will see more of such creative ideas soon enough. Until then, ‘Pokémon Tarnished’ seems like a brilliant idea that would sell like hotcakes on multiple platforms.

Would Games Like Elden Ring Work Well as Pixelated, Turn-Based Versions of the Same?

It feels as daunting as Elden Ring and looks like older Pokémon games.
It feels as daunting as Elden Ring and looks like older Pokémon games.

This post and its dedication to bringing back the good old days of turn-based RPGs might have brought up the question of modern-day gaming’s take on the same. After all, we have multiple Soulslike games that are successful in their own right. Most of these make an attempt at recreating the magic FromSoftware has been able to do throughout the years.

However, few of these dive into the niche realm of turn-based exploratory RPGs that give a similar sense of challenge and freedom found in the original games. Titles like Sea of Stars and Octopath Traveler come to mind.

These games have carried on the decades-old legacy of video games that thrived on simple yet charming visuals, giving players a world of characters and threats to explore.

On the other hand, we have certain dedicated fans in the community who make screenshots and trailers of possible collaborations, such as Bloodborne x Mario Kart. That may be a hilarious take on a nostalgic trip many are familiar with, but it feels equally promising as an actual game of its own. What’s your take on such creative re-incarnations?
