The mastermind behind Elden Ring and other FromSoftware titles, Hidetaka Miyazaki, appeared in an interview recently to speak about his work over the years, including its unexpected popularity, notorious difficulty, and player enjoyment, among other topics.
One of the lighter moments of the interview briefly touched on Miyazaki’s opinion of fan-made content and the way people choose to experience his games. His answer was quite positive, encouraging fans to continue to do what they’re doing, and he expressed that he enjoyed seeing “that kind of community interaction.”
Elden Ring God Miyazaki Gives Mods the Green Signal
The FromSoftware community is no stranger when it comes to humorous cosmetic mods and self-imposed challenges that make the game infinitely harder than it already is. These games give players the freedom to experience them in their true form or mold them into something more enjoyable for them.
According to a recent Eurogamer interview, the boss himself is completely okay with it.
It’s something we shouldn’t try to discourage, whether it’s speedruns or challenge plays or playing with a banana. It’s something that should be enjoyed and it’s just great to see that kind of community interaction.
On the topic of humor, Miyazaki conveyed that while certain areas are intentionally designed to be humorous, he noted that players sometimes perceive serious or ‘dark’ elements in a light-hearted way as well, even though it was completely unintentional.
He went on to say that he felt this perspective was a natural result of the players themselves and the environment they’re playing in. Think of it as finding humor in difficult situations, which FromSoftware fans will almost always find themselves in within the series’ desolated and cursed worlds.
FromSoftware Mods Let You Shape Your Adventure
FromSoftware’s vibrant modding community allows a whole new level of player agency and provides ways for fans to enjoy its games in new ways, be they humorous or truer to the game’s direction.
Some mods transcend the FromSoftware universe itself—imagine playing as Vergil from Devil May Cry 5, 2B from Nier: Automata, or even Tekken 8′s Yoshimitsu.
Some mods go above and beyond to redefine the entire gaming experience. The Garden of Eyes mod for Elden Ring, for instance, transforms combat dynamics and integrates assets from other FromSoftware games, offering a fresh perspective to even the most seasoned players.
Then, we have mods like Elden Ring Reborn, which serve to add depth to the lore and player experience without taking off too far from Miyazaki’s vision. The ambitious project introduces new boss fights, areas, and quality-of-life improvements, among other changes that still feel very FromSoftware-coded.
All of these mods exist for the enjoyment of the community, and while they serve different segments, they all unite in one aspect: they were born out of love for FromSoftware’s titles.
