While we know that the narrative will focus on Miquella in the Land of Shadow, people are not sure where this land fits. Is it part of the normal timeline, is it another dimension, or is it an alternate version of The Lands Between? Translating a recent interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki has answered this important question for many fans.

Reddit user theangryfurlong took it upon themselves to translate the entire Famitsu interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki. A decent chunk of the information is already known to audiences, but some specific tidbits are very exciting.

The biggest one relates to the setting of the DLC, the mysterious area known simply as The Land of Shadow.

Miyazaki confirmed players will not be time travelling or visiting alternate versions of The Lands Between. The events of the DLC will take place in the same timeline as the main game. Touching the hand in Mohg’s arena will transport players to the DLC.

On being asked about the strange veil we can see in the sky attached to what looks like an Erdtree, Miyazaki dropped an interesting piece of lore. He stated that this new land has been sundered from The Lands Between, and the veils act to hide this land, almost like an invisibility cloak it seems.

While it is known the Elden Ring DLC will focus on Miquella, Miyazaki stated the history of this land and the history of Queen Marika is one of the main pillars of the expansion. The story of the DLC is also going to be delivered in classic FromSoftware fashion: via NPCs. Speaking with them, and fighting them, is going to be our main form of exposition and understanding Miquella’s role in The Land of Shadow.

Aside from the DLC Setting, Miyazaki Shared Other Details about the Expansion

Don't let the snake, large spear, brooding look, slitted eyes, and blood-red flames fool you, Messmer may be a great guy.

Another interesting factoid came when Miyazaki was asked if the DLC would also be a heroic tale like the base game. In his response, he referred to Messmer as a “hero. This does change the perception of Messmer, as it was thought he would be the main antagonist. It could be that he is opposed to the Tarnished, but not a bad guy in the traditional sense of the role.

Miyazaki also confirmed that this is the largest DLC FromSoftware has ever created. Sadly, he also confirmed that the studio does not have any plans for a new DLC shortly. Those of you hoping for more content to be announced soon, you’ve got a long wait ahead of you.
