Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 film, Sicario, was certainly one of the best films to come out in recent years. The film was a masterpiece in every way, perfectly executing its story and building up to catastrophe in a bone-chilling manner. On top of the filmmaker’s genius, its cast was truly exceptional, with Benicio del Toro front and center, and Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Jon Bernthal by his side throughout.

While the movie has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its sequel was unable to maintain the same quality. When Sicario: Day of the Soldado was released in 2018, many fans were disappointed at the noticeable decline between the two projects, and many credited Villeneuve’s absence in the second part as the reason for it.

Now that a third part of the story has been confirmed, there may only be one way to bring back the series’ hype. Unfortunately, this might be unachievable.

Sicario 3—A Fate Unknown

In early 2022, Josh Brolin gave an interview with The Hollywood Reporter where he revealed that a third part of the Sicario film is already in motion. He mentioned that Taylor Sheridan will be heading the writing again, and he has already come up with a screenplay.

“It’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and…We think it deserves a third one,” said Brolin.

Since then, many fans of the series have wondered if Denis Villeneuve will make his return in the third installment. Even though the first film has been collectively regarded as a masterpiece, there is no denying that the second film was a disappointment as a follow-up. If the third part follows a similar path, it is highly unlikely that it will be able to maintain the audience’s attention.

With this in mind, it is extremely concerning that the film has come out with little to no updates for more than a year.

Denis Villeneuve Could Act As Messiah

A fact that is undeniable is that Sicario 3 needs Denis Villeneuve to come back. Even though the second film was not horrible, it did not meet the expectations the first film set for fans, and the Dune filmmaker can be thanked for that. Both the films were written by Taylor Sheridan, who is excellent at what he does. However, Villeneuve brought a specific flare to the first film that was evidently missing from the second.

While the answer to a successful Sicario 3 may seem simple on paper, acting it out may be a lot more difficult. The simplest approach would be to bring the filmmaker back into the series; he has not shied away from sequels in the past and might want to continue telling the story he started.

However, after the success of Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve has his hands full. According to IMDb, the filmmaker is currently working on multiple projects, including the third adaptation of Frank Herbert’s hit book series. While many would hope that he would be able to get it all, unfortunately, reality does not allow it.
