Anime fans might not know this, but Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion was probably one of the first anime series to revolutionize the anime world by introducing giant robot monsters fighting with each other while being piloted mostly by teenagers. While there were other series that were working on such narratives, no one was able to make it as big as Anno.

And now, after two decades, the creator of the series has once again highlighted the intention of creating a sequel to one of the biggest series of all time; however, there is a twist to this. Anno has stated that there is a world where he might not be the one to create it; rather, he would pass the baton to someone else.

Also, while talking about the potential sequel, Anno pointed out that the new anime fans don’t prefer new visuals and would rather focus on something they have already seen.

Hideaki Anno Hints at the Possibility of Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Sequel

In a recent interview with the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Neon Genesis Evangelion’s creator talked a lot about his franchise and the recent Hideaki Anno Exhibition in Nagoya, Japan. During the interview, Anno was asked about his plans for a potential sequel to his magnum opus in the future.

Anno replied:

“There may be plans for more in the Evangelion anime franchise. The prospect of an Evangelion sequel made by someone other than myself could exist. I haven’t decided yet — or rather, it’s better for the work if there’s a high degree of freedom.”

Talking about the financial side of the potential Neon Genesis Evangelion’s sequel, Anno stated:

“Whether it’s commercially viable or interesting would depend on the content. It’s not like I’m saying I’ll never make another one again or anything like that.”

While the creator believes in the potential of another Neon Genesis series, he thinks that there might be a chance that the new sequel could be created by someone other than him. While Anno’s is one of the most important reasons why Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the biggest successes, there are multiple factors that make passing the baton to someone else a viable option.

Hideaki Anno’s Perspective on Introducing New Visuals in His Works

While talking about the potential sequel, Anno was asked whether he would like to revolutionize the series once again by creating new visuals. Anno stated that the new generation doesn’t want something new. He further pointed out that they are very happy with the way things are going right now.

Anno stated:

“I don’t think so. Young people today don’t want something new. I think they would rather maintain their peace of mind with something they have seen before than feel stressed by seeing something they have never seen before.”

He also explained that the recent Shonen Jump titles are the talk of the town, and as he is not a part of the mainstream anymore, he is happy with working on the edge.

However, contrary to his beliefs, if Neon Genesis Evangelion makes a return with a new anime series in the current wave, it will surely change the legacy of the creator.

You can watch Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix.
