Your armor in Helldivers 2 determines how long you’ll be able to survive on the battlefield. When fighting for Super Earth supremacy, the more active boots on the ground, the better the chances for mission success. While the armor and cape combo looks cool, there’s one bit of gear that also has a role to play.

The helmets in the game are currently purely cosmetic, but that wasn’t always the case! The developer team wanted to give them certain attributes and effects that could affect gameplay. Sadly, this idea was scrapped, as are many in gaming, due to the biggest challenge: time.

Johan Pilestedt Reveals Possible Plans for Helldivers 2 Helmets

The CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios is very vocal and accessible on X/Twitter. Pilestedt can be seen often engaging with fan theories and answering queries from the community. Another way to reach him is through the game’s Discord channel. It’s through these channels that we have an idea of how helmets were originally planned for the game.

Armor in Helldivers 2 is given certain attributes that function as buffs. One Discord member asked if the same was ever going to be implemented for the helmets and capes. Capes are a great way to show off your sense of fashion and even your frustration with certain account-linking decisions. Capes will stay mostly cosmetic for now, but Pilestedt had more to say about the helmets.

He said there was a conversation happening around the attributes of helmets, and the plan was for helmets of different classes to offer different HUDs.

Not to capes, but I know there’s a conversation on helmets. Originally, each helmet was going to have a unique ‘HUD’ – so medics would be able to see health, recon would get enemy outlines, etc. But we unfortunately had to cut it due to… Well, having to ship the game.

As with most development plans, time constraints are what led to this possible outcome being axed. The team could add these helmets as a DLC, but it would take a considerable amount of time.

Pilestedt also went on to talk about some new melee weapons that were cut from the final game. New weapons are added via the monthly Warbonds, and there is a chance things like the ceremonial blade or bayonet may make an appearance as a Warbond exclusive weapon in the future. The conversation was not all about in-game gear.

Another Discord member asked about VRR and 40FPS in quality mode, to which Pilestedt said many plans have been put on hold. He attributed this to the success of the game, which resulted in many technical changes and fixes taking precedence. He does hope the team can tick everything off the to-do list at some point.

Helldivers 2 has been facing a degree of backlash due to the account-linking fiasco the game went through recently. While that controversy is now dying down, there are still countries where the game is delisted due to the regions not supporting PSN.
