Rogue One is arguably one of the most appreciated Star Wars projects post the Original Trilogy. The spin-off released in 2016 explored how a band of Rebels stole the plans of the Death Star before the events of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope.
The Diego Luna film was very different in its style and tonality than the other projects in George Lucas’ space opera franchise. But the project was intended to be even more different, as the makers wanted to give importance to Saw Gerrera in the story.

Saw Gerrera was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars before making his live-action debut with Rogue One. Forest Whitaker played the live-action version in the 2016 film.
Kathleen Kennedy regrets how Saw Gerrera was handled in Rogue One
The Star Wars fans must have noticed that Saw Gerrera has become a recurrent character in the franchise. Following his fateful appearance in Rogue One, Forest Whitaker reprised his role in the prequel shows Star Wars Rebels, Andor, and in the game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Despite not being portrayed by Whitaker, Saw Gerrera also appeared in Star Wars: The Bad Batch series.
It looks like the makers always wanted to make Saw Gerrera a key character in this new phase of Star Wars. In an interview with Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy admitted that she wanted to give more importance to Gerrera’s story in Rogue One.

Besides the performances and the brilliant technical aspects, Rogue One is also memorable for its ending. The fans are left broken as the Rebel Alliance successfully executed their mission at the cost of their lives.
Kennedy stated that the makers wanted Gerrera to be a more important character in the film. However, as they could not do it, she wanted to explore the character more in future projects.
To be honest, we originally thought we were going to develop Saw into something much larger, but we couldn’t accommodate it. So he is not in the movie as much as we would like to have him in the movie, which creates the opportunity to explore his character even further in our future development.
Forest Whitaker also added that he was “curious about what else they’re about to do” with his character as the makers liked Saw Gerrera very much.
Will Saw Gerrera appear in Andor Season 2?

Similar to Rogue One, its prequel series Andor starring Diego Luna also amassed significant viewership and critical praise after its release on Disney+. The fans and critics were impressed with Tony Gilroy’s mature and gritty treatment of the series.
Following the success of the first season, soon it was reported that Andor has been renewed for Season 2. While the fans were excited to know which characters would return, Forest Whitaker confirmed in an interview with Comic Book that “it’s safe to say that” he will reprise his role in the second season.
With Kathleen Kennedy’s interest in exploring more about the character of Saw Gerrera, we may expect to see more of him in the upcoming Star Wars prequel projects after Andor Season 2.
Andor Season 2 is expected to be released sometime in 2025 on Disney+. Meanwhile, fans can check out all the other Star Wars content on Disney+.
