Working in a set like Fantastic Beasts has its ups and downs, and for actress Katherine Waterston, who played Porpentina Goldstein, it was her costume that extremely bothered her.

Katherine Waterston On Her Uncomfortable Fantastic Beasts Outfit

During an interview with BuzzFeed, Katherine Waterston said the hardest thing she had to get used to was her coat. She claimed the weight of it terribly became a nuisance while filming.

In this film, I wear a navy blue leather trench that I think weighs about 30 pounds. Maybe that’s not a lot of weight for a strong person, but I had to kind of get fit for the coat. It was sort of like trying to move through mud up to your neck. It’s like something’s trying to pull you to the ground all the time.

Her cumbersome jacket would eventually get her a twitch, as revealed by costar Eddie Redmayne. “Before every single take she would not be comfortable unless she fiddled with her belt,” the actor stated.

The actress confirmed this and said that if she tied her belt really tight, it would ease up the burden on her shoulders, but only a little bit. More importantly, it affected the way she moved her wand.

It was the wandwork. It was sort of like doing wandwork with someone pushing down on your arm, so I got kind of jacked just from the coat.

The actress joked that she could start a workout video which she would entitle ‘Leather Coat Workout’. Regardless, her performance was exemplary, and she even had an impromptu workout session while filming.

Katherine Waterston Chose Her Own Wand And Wardrobe

In a conversation with Muggle Net, Waterston talked about choosing her wand and costume for the film. Since she will become a face in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, she has to choose the perfect ensemble.

I mean, obviously, this is my first wand, but picking shoes for a character, the clothes, and all the different things that you consider when you’re figuring that stuff out during pre-production.

The actress claimed that the process included considering the practical needs and “specific little weird ideas you have about the character that nobody else ever knows about.”

Indeed, if she chose the coat for herself, then it’s definitely a worthy sacrifice on her part. The jacket perfectly suited her character and it also gave off an elegant yet aloof vibe.

Waterston claimed that the decision to pick her wardrobe was a personal journey, almost a private matter for her. She did not talk about it to director David Yates but just knew, “Yeah, this makes more sense for Tina.”

Fantastic Beasts trilogy is available to watch on Netflix.
