Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the upcoming title in the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise, is all set to launch on November 15, 2024, and fans are excited for a new journey to feudal-era Japan. The cinematic trailer was absolutely epic, and fans are expecting to see that same quality in-game.
Despite exciting fans, the game became a topic of discussion and was soon surrounded by controversy. It seems to be continuing, as the game Assassin’s Creed Shadows has achieved quite a distinctive accolade that any game, let alone Assassin’s Creed, would not like to have by its name.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows cinematic trailer was released last week, revealing the launch date, and it immediately drew backlash from fans who said the game has ‘historical inaccuracy’ and is ‘woke.’ This has led to players showing their disappointment with the trailer.
They decided to do it by disliking it all over the YouTube channels, wherever it was shared. The video shared on the official Ubisoft YouTube channel at the time of writing has 276,000 likes and over 586,000 dislikes. The trailer has grossed nearly 8 million views after over a week of the reveal.
With this, the trailer has become the most disliked Assassin’s Creed trailer in the series, and it is not only dislike-bombed on the Ubisoft channel but elsewhere as well. The game has also been dislike-bombed on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, and it has around 15,000 likes compared to 36,000 dislikes.
Another video titled ‘Who Are Naoe and Yasuke?’ introducing the characters also got the same treatment. The video recorded 29,000 likes and 83,000 dislikes on the channel, with 1.1 million views. This shows that the fans are not happy and, if not addressed by the developer, may cost the game upon launch.
Fans Are Not Happy With the Black Samurai Protagonist
![Players are not happy with Yasuke as a protagonist in the game.](https://fwmedia.fandomwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/24030215/assassins-creed-shadows-trailer-review-1024x576.jpg)
The main reason behind this backlash is the Black samurai in Japan, who is also the protagonist and is said to be based on a real-life historical figure called Yasuke. As per the records available, Yasuke was a man of African origin who served under the renowned Japanese warlord Nobunaga Oda, but nothing more is known about him other than that.
Fans on social media have said that they are not okay with the game featuring a Black protagonist when the franchise is finally going to Japan. Several players from all around the world have said that this character does not deserve to be in the game when the game is about Japan.
Although the character has been portrayed several times in the media, fans argue that his time in Japan is not properly documented. The game has historic settings, but as it is media, the developer is allowed to go around about the things in it, but this doesn’t seem to sit well with the fans.
