Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot was released earlier this year to surprisingly good reviews. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the show, created by Glover along with Francesca Sloane, followed two spies who are partnered up as a married couple while on a mission. The show was renewed for a second season recently.

While the show’s second-season renewal was met with fanfare, rumors began to float about Glover and Erskine being dropped from the show. However, showrunner Sloane debunked the rumor and mentioned that the cliffhanger from the season finale still stands and that the rumors were untrue.

While the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starring action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith explored the lives of a couple who were also undercover agents for rival agencies, the Amazon Prime Video series flipped the plot and saw Donald Glover and Maya Erskine playing agents from the same agency undercover a married couple for a mission.

The show received positive reviews and was recently renewed for a new season by Prime Video. However, Variety recently reported that their sources indicated that Glover and Erskine might not return to the show. The report suggested that the show might go in the anthology route and see a different set of actors take on the Smiths cover.

These rumors, however, were recently debunked by Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane. The showrunner mentioned that the ‘sources’ were inaccurate and that the first season’s cliffhanger ending still stood. She said to EW,

I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?’ We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven’t said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?… We didn’t even get to start writing [season 2] yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.

The show’s ending sees Glover and Maya Erskine being pursued by another pair of John and Jane Smith attempting to assassinate them. After a long battle, the finale ends on a cliffhanger, not revealing yet if the Smiths (protagonists) survived the ordeal.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane has spoken about the potential for a season 2 after the first season’s cliffhanger ending. The creator mentioned that the team had always felt that they had more story to tell with the characters if given another chance, while also being a good standalone piece in case there is no season 2.

The creator had mentioned her plans for the second season and whether she had discussed it with co-creator Donald Glover to EW,

I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here. And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.

Sloane also mentioned that she was satisfied with how they went about the established IP and the genre by subverting it as well as making it familiar to the audiences.
