Marvel just dropped a brand new game, and if you’re just finding out about this, you wouldn’t be the first person or the last. A new entry into the What If…? series, the game is out to play right now.

There’s a catch, however. Unless you’re an owner of one of the Apple Vision Pros, tough luck; you’re not going to get a chance to play the game. According to reviews, however, it doesn’t look like you’re missing out on much.

There’s a New Marvel Game Most People Won’t Play

Released on May 30th, 2024, in the new What If…? title, you, the hero of the multiverse, must acquire the infinity stones to save the multiverse while being aided along the way by various characters from the MCU.

If this sounds intriguing, the great news is that you won’t have to shell out a single penny to experience it. That is, so long as you have the $3,500 Vision Pro VR headset. Just a ‘minor‘ expense for an hour-long free experience.

It’s been around three months since the release of Apple’s headset, and it’s not doing so well. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple initially projected selling 800,000 units of the VR headset.

Sales have not been up to par, however, and it has cut expectations to anywhere between 400,000 and 450,000 units, meaning almost 50% of what it projected.

Now, we can’t tell you exactly how many Marvel fans are out there, but we’re sure there are a lot more than 400,000. Meaning that most of the fanbase probably won’t even get to try the game out but will get to have a taste by watching videos and reading reviews of the very few that do.

Is It Worth Getting a Vision Pro for the What If…? Game?

If the Vision Pro didn't cost more than double the average rent in the U.S., then maybe.

If you have enough money to consider buying a $3,500 headset to play an hour-long VR experience, chances are money isn’t a problem for you, so why not? Serious answer: no, probably not.

Just to be clear, it’s more of an interactive experience than a game. You’re following a scripted set of events, and while there are things you can do, they tend to get repetitive as the story moves along.

The game’s director, David Bushore, even clarified in an email to The Verge that it is “holistically different than a game.

While that’s pretty much it for the new Marvel game, this could open avenues for more interactive experiences making it to the Vision Pro.

The game has the potential to be something bigger and better, but it feels like the technology, the interest, and the userbase aren’t in sync, and we’re in a situation where it’s not worth exploring that yet.
