Netflix may be one of the biggest, most successful, and wealthy streaming platforms, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t come out victorious in reportedly duping quite a few actors.
This comes after these reportedly affected actors — one of them being Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad — themselves called out the multi-billionaire platform for cheating them when it came to their paychecks.
While initially, Paul was the one to boldly expose the streaming giant like that, it turns out that he isn’t the only one affected.
According to the latest reports, filmmaker Mike Flanagan, the genius behind horror masterpieces like The Haunting of Hill House, has come forward to slam the subscription video on-demand streaming service.
Mike Flanagan Reportedly Exposes Netflix’s Dark Side
It seems like one of the best helmers of the horror genre in the entertainment industry has also been a victim of the streamer’s duping. This comes after filmmaker Mike Flanagan reportedly unveiled the dark secrets of the streaming giant that no one talks about.
According to @PhysicalMedia_ on X, the Midnight Mass helmer said:
In the years I worked at Netflix, I tried very hard to get them to release my work on blu-ray & DVD. They refused at every turn. It became clear very fast that their only priority was subs, & that they were actively hostile to the idea of physical media.
While these are pretty harsh allegations about the media distributing service, Flanagan also pointed out just how dangerous this would turn out to be for the artists.
Continuing in the statement, Mike Flanagan is reported as having said:
This is a very dangerous point of view. While companies like Netflix pride themselves on being disruptors, and have proven that they can affect great change in the industry, they sometimes fail to see the difference between disruption and damage.
Needless to say, this failure to observe this difference could inevitably result in tremendous harm being inflicted on the artists. As Flanagan continued to say:
So much that they can find themselves, intentionally or not, doing enormous harm to the very concept of film preservation.
All of this being said, it is only understandable why the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes lasted so long, considering how this was one of the major issues artists wanted to eliminate.
Before Him, Aaron Paul Slammed the Streaming Giant for Duping Him
As it turns out, Emmy-winning actor cum producer, Aaron Paul, renowned for playing Jesse Pinkman in the blockbuster crime-thriller Breaking Bad series, has been terribly affected by this reported behavior of the streaming giant as well.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight Canada, the Need for Speed actor revealed how he has been cheated with the residuals of his masterpiece series, saying (via Entertainment Weekly):
I don’t get a piece from Netflix on Breaking Bad, if we’re being totally honest, and that’s insane to me. Shows live forever on these streamers, and it goes through waves.
That being said, Paul isn’t one to just sit quiet and let these reportedly unjust events unfold.
As per what Aaron Paul said during the same interview:
I just saw the other day that Breaking Bad was trending on Netflix. I think a lot of these streamers, they know that they have been getting away with not paying people a fair wage, and now it’s time to pony up. That’s just one of the things that we’re fighting for.
All in all, these actors and artists being reportedly duped this way is indeed an unjust act and isn’t something that they could just get away with easily. If anything, if this situation continues, then Hollywood just needs to brace itself for yet another series of strikes.
