Since the inception of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, excluding Spider-Man, the only thing that has gone their way till now is the Venom franchise. Even though the first movie failed to win over critics and was panned critically, it made enough splash at the box office to warrant a sequel and keep Sony’s strive for an interconnected universe alive.
However, apart from Venom, Sony’s attempt at a villain-centric universe hasn’t worked out well, as two of their last releases were both critical and box-office failures. But with the threequel on the way, whose first trailer has been released, it seems this might not be the last of the Symbiote.
Venom 3‘s Success Could Lead to a Toxin Film
With Kravin: The Hunter delayed back to December of this year, the fate of Sony’s Spider-Man universe will highly hinge on the performance of Venom: The Last Dance. But it’s important to note that the previous two releases did make big at the box office, with the sequel even improving upon the first one in terms of quality.
Furthermore, considering this will be Tom Hardy’s last dance as the character, it’s hopeful to assume that he’ll attempt to go out with a bang. However, if the threequel did prove to be a success upon its release, we might be in for some more Symbiote moving forward.
In the trailer, for a brief moment, when Stephen Graham’s Patrick Mulligan was revealed, the closed captions for his dialogues referred to him as Toxin instead of his human counterpart. For the unversed, in the comics, Toxin is the third major Symbiote after Venom and Carnage, which takes New York’s finest police officer Patrick Mulligan as its host.
The story of Patrick Mulligan ticks all the boxes to fit the Sony formula when it comes to their villain-centric universe, which is yet to pick up pace. While a movie with him at the forefront might seem a distant thought at first glance, considering the SSU’s history, it doesn’t seem implausible. For example, when Morbius flopped and became the b-tt of all internet jokes, Sony infamously tried to capitalize on it by releasing the movie in selected theatres, only for it to flop even harder.
So it’s not hard to see that Sony might once again look to capitalize on making a Toxin feature, if Venom 3 proves to be a success, as the symbiote movies have been their biggest cash cow so far. But keeping in mind that Tom Hardy is the biggest reason behind Venom‘s success if Sony execs at the top did greenlight a Toxin movie, there are chances it might become their new Morbius.
Juno Temple Details Tom Hardy’s Passion for Venom
While at the core, the Venom releases didn’t break new grounds upon their release, the foremost reason behind their success, as opposed to other Sony releases, is Tom Hardy. From the previous two entries, it’s pretty evident that the Mad Max star adores the character, and Venom 3 star Juno Temple recently confirmed Hardy’s passion for the franchise.
She detailed (Happy, Sad, Confused):
Tom is such a fan of Venom and the relationship between Eddie and Venom. He’s so excited about telling this story and is so thrilled to have other people be part of [that]. He feels like a kid on the first day at school. That’s pretty good energy to start a job with as it’s intimidating, but when you have Venom himself as excited and nervous as you are because you all care, it feels like, ‘Ah, I’m in the right place!’
Although on paper, a Toxin film doesn’t seem like the best idea to continue stories surrounding the symbiote, following some of Sony’s questionable decisions regarding their Marvel slate, you never know.
Venom: The Last Dance will hit theatres on 24 October 2024.
