First announced early last year, the next installment in Sid Meier’s renowned franchise has finally been unveiled. The upcoming Civilization 7 received a cinematic teaser at Summer Game Fest, giving fans a first glimpse of what’s to come.
While keeping things vague, the trailer sets the tone for the upcoming “revolutionary new chapter” in the series, suggesting it might take the franchise to new heights when the game launches next year.
Civilization 7 Gets World Premiere Trailer at Summer Game Fest
2K and Firaxis joined the 2024 Summer Game Fest extravaganza on Friday to reveal Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, just hours after the announcement was leaked when a banner for the game accidentally went live on 2K’s website.
At Geoff Keighley’s event, a cinematic trailer gave viewers a first look at the next installment in the celebrated series. It shows off civilizations from different eras, including the Middle Ages through the Industrial Age, but doesn’t entail many details about the game itself.
More information on what players can expect from the next title in the legendary series that has been running for over three decades will be revealed at a gameplay showcase this August. Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 is being developed by Firaxis Games and scheduled to launch day-and-date on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2025.

Ever since the first game launched in 1991, the franchise has become one of the biggest and most popular series in the 4X strategy genre. The team has mostly relied on their tried-and-tested structure, allowing players to lead human civilizations through the millennia and build their empires according to their designs.
Civilization 7 will seemingly build on this. In a press release by 2K, Sid Meier, the founder and director of creative development at Firaxis Games stated:
I’m incredibly excited for Civ fans to see Civilization VII, a game that represents the culmination of three decades of strategy innovation and refinement.
The publisher added that the team was trying to accomplish something that’s “nothing short of breathtaking,” suggesting the upcoming game could take things further than the series has done before.
The trailer is very vague, allowing mere speculation on where the title will take the series. From what we have seen and what has been said, the seventh mainline game might delve deeper into the details and processes that make a civilization and culture.
This could potentially include cultural practices, the development of architecture, historical movements, and potentially more to build on the strategy genre. Other games, including titles such as Humankind or the upcoming strategy game Ara: History Untold, keep trying to build on Civilization’s recipe and refresh the genre with updated mechanics.
Now it remains to be seen how the iconic Sid Meier will take his long-running franchise to new heights. Are you excited that the legendary 4X strategy franchise is returning? What would you like to see in Civilization 7 when it launches next year? Let us know in the comments.
