One of the prominent stars that shared the screen with Stewart was Mad Max: Fury Road actor Tom Hardy. Being a young actor just over 25 years old, Stewart and Tom Hardy weren’t exactly compatible on the sets of Star Trek: Nemesis and Stewart thought that Hardy would be a failure!
Sir Patrick Stewart Found Tom Hardy To Be Quite “Odd”
From all the reviews and interviews that we have read, it feels that Tom Hardy is allegedly bit of an introvert or an antisocial person. Well, when he was just 25 years old, the actor starred in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis alongside Patrick Stewart.
Although his acting skills were quite exceptional, the X-Men actor revealed that he didn’t bond on any social levels with his cast mates. Since Hardy portrayed a younger clone of Jean-Luc Picard called Shinzon, Stewart thought that he would try to bond with the actor.
In his new memoir titled Making It So: A Memoir (via Insider), Stewart referred to Tom Hardy as sort of an “odd” fellow. While talking about his experience working on the sets of Star Trek: Nemesis, Stewart had a lot to say about the Venom actor,
Nemesis, which came out in 2002, was particularly weak. I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play, and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.
He further wrote,
Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level. Never said, ‘Good morning,’ never said, ‘Goodnight,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend.
However, Stewart wasn’t complaining about Hardy’s behaviors, he just wanted to establish a rapport with the actor. Unable to do so, the Logan actor writes that when the filming ended, Hardy left without even saying goodbye.
Back in 2002, the actor made a prediction about Hardy’s fame and success in Hollywood. Since he was a bit of an antisocial person, Patrick Stewart thought that The Dark Knight Rises actor wouldn’t make it in Hollywood.
Patrick Stewart Didn’t Think Tom Hardy Would Make It
As the memoir further continued, Stewart continued to talk about Hardy’s antisocial behavior. The actor revealed that he harbored no ill will to the Mad Max: Fury Road actor but it was just difficult to establish a rapport between the two gentlemen.
When the filming wrapped on Star Trek: Nemesis, Stewart wrote that Tom Hardy left without even saying goodbye. This led Stewart to make a comment about Hardy’s future in Hollywood.
On the evening Tom wrapped his role, he characteristically left without ceremony or niceties, simply walking out of the door.
He further continued,
As it closed, I said quietly to Brent [Spiner] and Jonathan [Frakes], ‘And there goes someone I think we shall never hear of again.’ It gives me nothing but pleasure that Tom has proven me so wrong.
Following his breakthrough role, Tom Hardy quickly rose to fame in Hollywood by starring in films like The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, and, The Revenant. On the other hand, Patrick Stewart even acknowledged that he was happy for Hardy.
Star Trek: Nemesis, which starred both iconic stars, received a rating of 6.4/10 on IMDB and a record low of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn’t anything grand but was more of a movie that wanted to keep the Star Trek franchise relevant.
