The latest Doom game has a medieval twist to it. Recently revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase after months of rumors and leaks, the game is set to launch next year on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
But that hasn’t stopped modders from already including one of its best new weapons into the original Doom game – the new shield. This isn’t just any old shield. It’s practically turning players into a brutal and bloody version of Captain America.
The New Shield Has Already Been Modded to the Classic Doom
This shield isn’t just for blocking attacks; you can actually use it as a weapon, throwing it at enemies and watching them get wrecked. The shield looks great, and it’s got this rugged, battle-worn design that fits perfectly with the whole medieval vibe of the game. But the real fun starts when you see it in action.
This took you 12 hours after the trailer dropped…

When you throw the shield, it doesn’t just bounce off enemies like you’d expect; it slices through them with a satisfying crunch. You can take down multiple enemies in one throw if you’re lucky and have them lined up perfectly. And the best part is that the shield comes back to you, just like Captain America’s shield or Thor’s hammer. It’s super satisfying to watch it fly back into your hands after causing some serious damage.
Players are already loving it, and some genius modders have already figured out how to bring it into the original game, just within 12 hours of the trailer being released. They’ve managed to take a weapon designed for a completely different style of gameplay and make it work seamlessly in the original game. The mod is also publicly available to download now.
Doom: The Dark Ages Has a Brand New Medieval Setting
The Doom series is legendary, known for its intense action and brutal, gory combat. Now, it’s about to take a bold step in a new direction with the upcoming release of Doom: The Dark Ages. This new installment throws players into a medieval setting, serving as a prequel to the past two games.
In this game, you won’t be wielding futuristic guns or high-tech gadgets anymore. Instead, you’ll arm yourself with a shield and other old-fashioned weapons. The hellish creatures you know and fear are still present with updated designs, but the tools to fight them have changed dramatically.
The setting of The Dark Ages looks richly detailed and atmospheric from the gameplay trailer. It will likely show the origins of the Slayer, as well as other locations and characters that have been hinted at in two of the previous Doom games. The art style combines a gothic horror vibe with a medieval fantasy setting, making it look absolutely stunning.
The enemies in the game are both familiar and new. Classic demons return with a medieval makeover, alongside new monstrosities inspired by medieval mythology. Expect to face off against demonic knights and other grotesque creatures.
