Over the years, Kevin Costner has become one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. He has gained a reputation for the kinds of roles he plays, losing himself in the intentions of his characters and the false realities built around them. His skill has made him quite a beloved figure in the world of the film industry.
Be it Yellowstone fans adoring the iconic John Dutton or those who enjoy cinema as a whole and love his appearances in critically acclaimed films like Dances with Wolves and JFK; he has certainly become quite a magnetic figure. So much so, that it would seem that even royalty cannot resist his charm.
Kevin Costner’s Meeting with the Prince
Recently, Kevin Costner gave an interview with People Magazine, where he talked about quite an interesting encounter he had with Prince William. Naturally, this is not a situation many can relate to; however, he mentioned that it had been quite enjoyable for him.
I happened to be in England, and I got this message that the prince would love to talk, and I said, ‘What?’… and then I went, ‘Okay,’
Costner revealed that he was once in England when he was told that the prince was interested in meeting him. Like any other person, the actor was very confused but decided to go along with it anyway. During their meeting, however, the Prince of Wales said something very interesting, unprompted.
We met in this room, and it was just us. He walked up, and we shook hands… The first line out of his mouth was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you.’
Once they were in each other’s company, the first thing that Costner was told by Prince William was that his mother, Princess Diana, was very fond of the actor. It is safe to say that this is a compliment of the highest regard.
Kevin Costner and Princess Diana Had a Close Bond
While many would be surprised at the unprompted mention of Princess Diana being fond of Kevin Costner, there is context behind it that adds a layer of sincerity and profoundness to it. In a separate interview with People Magazine, the actor revealed that before her passing, she was supposed to star in a movie with him. He was interested in making a sequel to his iconic film, The Bodyguard, and approached the Princess through Sarah Ferguson.
Sarah was really important. I always respect Sarah because she’s the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana. She was the one that set it up, and she never said, ‘Well, what about me? I’m a princess too.’ She was just so supportive of the idea.
She was supposed to play a love interest in the movie, and during this entire process, she and Costner grew quite close, having a unique sense of familiarity with each other. She would ask him about specific aspects of the movie and its production, and he would provide her with honest advice.
I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, ‘Are we going to have like a kissing scene?’ She said it in a very respectful way,
She was nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, ‘Yeah, there’s going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that okay too.’
Unfortunately, the day after Costner received the first draft of the film, The Princess of Wales was involved in a fatal car accident.
