Every 90s kid remembers the Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place. Well, it’s getting a sequel. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is an upcoming series that will act as a spin-off to the original TV show.

And to continue the story of magic and wizards, the plot for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is quite an interesting one. Still, the concept has been used before in the past, and did not seem to work well, and may not work for this one too!
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Is Following That ’90s Show!
It was the year 1998 when a sitcom titled That ’70s Show was released. Starring Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, and Danny Masterson in prominent roles, the sitcom gathered much critical praise and acclaim around the world.

In 2023, a sequel to the classic show was released titled That ’90s Show. The plotline of the 2023 series followed kids of the original characters taking center stage. The only problem was that the sequel never gained popularity with the present or the older generation. Featuring the worst of two worlds, That ’90s Show was a failure.
On the other hand, the recently announced sequel, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, is also a sequel to the OG Disney show. The problem is that a similar formula is going to be used in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.

David Henrie, who portrayed the role of Justin Russo will be reprising his role in the upcoming sequel while Selena Gomez will serve as an executive producer. It appears that the kids of the main characters will once again take center stage and replace the OG cast.
What appears to be a problem is that the formula has been used previously and has appeared to fail with That ’90s Show. Fans think that a similar fate awaits the upcoming Disney sequel, and they are right to fear so!
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Might Fail!
As far as reboots, remakes, and sequels of some classic shows go, all of them are mostly bad for the franchise. Although cinematic universes are the current trend, reboots are not considered a good thing at all (look at the DCU).

There are many examples of such scenarios. How I Met Your Father was canceled after 2 seasons. Star Trek (the 2009 film) was given a lot of backlash upon its release. The point is, if you are going to change that nostalgic feeling, the franchise is going to be doomed.
It was the very same reason why That ’90s Show failed while Man of Steel was considered a success. If the upcoming series were to bring in that flavor of nostalgia, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place might just be saved.
But from what the plot tells us, it seems that the show is repeating the same formula that That ’90s Show used. Fans hope that the TV series turns out to be actually good but as of now, nothing can be confirmed or denied.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is premiered to release sometime in 2024 but a release date hasn’t been announced.
