Al Pacino is considered to be one of the greatest names ever to be working in front of the camera. He is often considered to be one of the most prestigious names; after all, he has an extensive collection of films that have been smash-hit blockbusters across his stellar career. From The Godfather to House of Gucci, Pacino has several iconic roles.
However, none of the movie connoisseurs had imagined in their wildest dreams that the Scent of a Woman actor could give a flop in his career. That thought became a reality in 2011, when he decided to collaborate with Adam Sandler on probably the weirdest film of his career.
Without a shadow of a doubt, everyone’s perspective on the actor changed, as they thought that he was nearing the end of his Hollywood stardom after 55 years.
Al Pacino Opens Up About Working in the Worst Film of His Career
Al Pacino has a long list of films that include him in the list of Hollywood legends. However, later in his career, the actor decided to work on some of the most disappointing films to be made in the history of the film industry.
One such film was Adam Sandler’s 2011 film, Jack and Jill. It was not only a commercial failure but also a critical failure, with a score of 3% on the Tomatometer and a 36% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though the Happy Gilmore actor is considered to be a comedic genius, his 2011 comedy film was dubbed to be one of his worst projects ever. To give a brief idea of how bad the film was, it managed to sweep the 32nd Golden Raspberry Awards Ceremony in every category.
The film was full of bizarre scenes, including Al Pacino being a coffee enthusiast, where he danced to the tune of Dunkin’ Donuts, even changing his name to Dunkaccino. The scene was peak cinema, and that almost brought an end to his career.
During an interview via President Of Physical Media (@Physical Media_), Al Pacino mentioned how his image in the entertainment industry was ruined and no one would take him “serious anymore,” which has made him feel extremely embarrassed. He said,
After Jack & Jill, It went silent..No one would take me serious anymore. Until Marty and ‘The Irishman’ saved me, it was one of the most humiliating moments of my life.
The scene left the viewers laughing, and the actor can be seen rapping in the commercial. However, in the film, his reaction was memorable as he said, “Burn this. This must never be seen by anyone.” Nevertheless, the actor stated in a different interview about his bad habit.
Al Pacino On Why He Prefers To Work In Box Office Bombs
It is quite surprising to see the Insomnia actor working in a ton of films that have been placed next to failure and criticism. Fans wanted to know, why he was committed to working in back-to-back flops.
The burning question was finally answered by him when he was talking to GQ alongside another Hollywood legend, Robert De Niro. Pacino stated that the need to work in such films rose from the necessity to satisfy his ego, and it has become his “challenge” to make such films more entertaining to watch. He said,
You know what? I may be falling into a bad habit now. I think I’m starting to get a little perverse. I’m starting to want to do films that aren’t really very good and try to make them better. And that’s become my challenge.
The undying addiction to satisfy his pride is proving costly to him because it has eclipsed his reputation and put a massive dent in his Hollywood stardom.
Jack and Jill (2011) can be rented on AppleTV.
