In a promo released by HBO, Meleys’ head is paraded through the King’s Landing while Aegon is brought back in a box, implying he’s heavily burnt but survived. It appears that Aemond is spreading the story that it was Aegon who slew Meleys and was injured in the battle. The whole scene is certain to make some fans very uncomfortable.

Fans reacted to the new promo on X, sharing that it brought back the trauma from one Game of Thrones episode, that still horrifies fans. Red Wedding was a difficult episode to sit through for any fans of the original series. During the episode, Robb Stark and his direwolf Grey Wind are brutally killed after an act of betrayal.

To desecrate the fallen King in the North, the Frey and Bolton men parade the decapitated bodies of Robb and Grey, with Grey’s head sewn onto Robb’s body. Fans also pointed out that Targaeryens celebrating a dragon’s death was just disgusting. Many fans shared that they felt sick to their stomach seeing the scene in the promo. Some of the fan reactions read:

Episode 5 will see an undeterred Rhaenyra as she tries to avenge the death of Princess Rhaenys. The teaser hinted at a sinister plot from the Blacks when Mysaria shares with the Queen, “There is more than one way to fight a war.” Given that Mysaria had a hand in the Blood and Cheese plot, something far worse is coming upon the Greens.

According to George R.R. Martin‘s Fire and Blood, Aegon is found badly injured after Vhagar’s attack. He’s barely alive, with burns all over his body and his armor melted to his skin. Rhaenys’ charred body is also found in the books next to Meleys’ corpse. While Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre survives with grievous wounds.

Aegon will become bedridden according to the books. And in the absence of his brother, Aemond will take over as the Protector of the Realm. Aemond’s attack on Aegon seemed deliberate on the show, however, the book shows no such indication.
